ST150 vs Mondeo flywheel diameter - are they the same?

    Hi,
I have a Mondeo Duratec engine and dual mass flywheel. I am looking to fit a ST150 flywheel but I cant confirm whether or not they have same diameter ring gears? I only have the Mondeo starter motor so I need to know that it will work before I buy a St150 Flywheel (hoping to get an ST150 flywheel brought over to NZ but need to confirm sizing first)

    Cheers

    alex

From memory the ST150 flywheel is slightly smaller than the Mondeo version, so you will need a ST150 starter motor to match.

Yeah this is what I have read elsewhere. Does anyone have a st150 flywheel to hand that they could measure out outside diameter of the ring gear on. Then I can compare it to my mondeo item and confirm.

Then move on... finding a starter in nz to suit will be just as tricky as finding the st150 flywheel. Unless the mazdas share the same size diameter ring gear and starter as a st150??

Got your PM i can measure hopefully today. What is it you are trying to achieve. I have a duratec and mazda gearbox and i need mazda flywheel clutch and starter as i believe they are not interchangeable with ford stuff.

I will post later the size of the ST150 flywheel.

Awesome! Thanks for that. I'll dig out my flywheel tomorrow and compare. I'll come back here with the info so it might be of use to others.

    Cheers

Well I measured my dual mass flywheel. Horrible big lump of yuck. Comes in at 288mm.

So that's the difference then. Really only 3 or 4 mm? So I am guessing that the ST150 starter motor has one extra tooth on its pinion? Anyone know if this is correct. If so can I swap pinions between starters?

Maybe it looks like you could disassemble it. But if you have difficulty get things or maybe easier just getting starter and flywheel complete.

I'll compare. According to one ebay it states the tooth count as 11.

I cross referenced a few numbers and sometimes it seems the same unit is listed for Mondeo. I'm that's wrong though. I might try my local ford parts man and see what the official numbers are but they can be slow if not making money from it...

Yes- I would just get a starter as well but... costs are already adding up plus I'm lucky to have a fella visiting NZ who might just bring me the flywheel.. I doubt he'll relish the idea of adding a starter to his bag :-)

My other option is to turn up my own flywheel to suit my ring gear. I can then drill it to suit what ever clutch pressure plate I want (most likely mx5 to suit a mx5 disc)

I'd have to research what steel to use.

Precision Engineering Ltd (Auckland) do custom flywheels if you're looking at going down that route. He's made a couple of flywheels for me for the Cologne and Essex V6's over the years.

Sweet. Cheers for that. However given my meagre budget (typical of my builds..) if I end up going custom I'll machine it myself.

You can also have quartermaster make you a twin disk by starting with a flex plate if you're going the custom route. Only costs $800 US + shipping, less if you dont need a hydraulic release bearing.
