Air filters aren’t going to make valve gear noise any less, only induction noise which I’ve yet to hear anyone complain about

Surely fiters would block out some sound as the trumpets are just open mouths. My mexico was on the footman james stand at the manchester show last week and the drive up there 70 miles was a right racket cant here yourself think.
The engines spot on valve clearence.timing.fueling etc i want the induction roar but not this noise.

filters make almost no difference whatsoever to induction noise unless you have a bloody huge sealed airbox. and they make zero difference to mechanical noise

If you are running no filters at all then you have three options, cotton and gauze type, foam or make an air box with trunking to a separate air filter. Years gone by you buy airboxes that housed a long paper filter, however I have n't seen that type for many years.

We do forget how noisy some of the older x flow type engines were when we compare them to more modern engines. Maybe a good set of ear defenders might be a cheaper option.

trouble is its almost impossible to know what your hearing, at certain rpm and throttle positions your webers will make a kind of "clucking" noise, in that respect throttle bodies tend to be quieter although no different wot and reving hard

Clucking prob good way to describe it in a way im going to have to video and stick on youtube i think. If im driving say 40mph then take foot off gas the noise completely goes which led me to believe when butterflys are closed etc hence the thought of filters

your not going to get rid of the clucking without a proper sealed airbox, you are hearing individual intake induction pulses, as i said throttle bodies tend to be quieter in that respect ( no chokes or aux vents) and you dont get it with a down draft carb as the manifold and carb kills all the pulses in the intake.

i think jets are same, but as throttles, chokes and airflow, particularly due the manifold differences you cant just pull teh jets from your dcoes and stick them in idfs, you will need another dyno session to set them up again

Thanks again graham i think im going to go the idf route and start from scratch on them as i want to keep it old school.it also solves the servo tower prob.

i did chuckle at that, im now old enough to remember when old school wasnt old school at all, it was state of the art, and you know what they mostly did back then? it was either a standard carb, or twin dcoe webers and no filters!

idfs were very very rare and hugely expensive so pretty much the only users of them were big name tuning firms on works/semi works cars, joe bloggs in the street would of never had them

Main jets, emulsion tubes, air jets are the same as DCOE. Idle jets are IDF specific.
