    Perky's Mk1 RS2000

Well thought it was about time i started on this , been sat in my barn since before christmas gathering dust. Nothing new i suppose as its spent the last decade in another barn waiting to be restored, but the owner sadly died before he really started on it, so he left it to his cousin. He had planned on restoring it, but already had a 1300gt and a mk2 Rs to restore so eventually after 5 years decided to sell it.

Had a free afternoon so I pulled it out into the day light to make a start on striping it down ready to put it on a spit.

Since christmas ive been slowly collecting repair panels ready to make a start, got inner/out sills, centre chassis rails, front panel, floorpans and one rear arch should arrive tomorrow.

Still need strut tops (they are solid but are abit of a mess), wheel well, the front chassis rails are alittle crusty and i think prob need replacing too. It also had a sunroof which has been welded up, so will have to sort that too.
Started stripping the shell, windows, boot, bonnet afew interior bits. Had ago at getting the doors off, managed to get the drivers pins to move but not all that far so have given them a good squirt of WD40 and left them to soak for abit.

Not 100% sure on the final spec of it yet as thats along way off yet. I think it will be fairly original nothing that cant be swapped back to standard anyway. Im unsure of what engine to go for yet as the original Pinto is gone, depends on how much money i have when it comes to sorting an engine out for it. I dont have the original seats either but i would really like the interior original so will be on the look out for some nice seats.
Thats all along way off in the future as theres plenty of work on the shell to do 1st.

    Re: Perky's Mk1 RS2000

Done afew hours on it today (no pics though sorry), cut out the drivers inner sill and floorpan across to chassis rail. Found fibreglass matting under the bitumen coated floor, along with a number of tacked in patches. I found it had 2 inner sills and 3 outer sills! dont understand why people didnt cut the bad out 1st
After all the chopping i managed to weld a small section in at the bottom of the inner a-pillar. Feels so satisfiying putting new metal in after how depressing the cutting all the rust out gets you.
Will take some pics next time

    Re: Perky's Mk1 RS2000

Did abit more today, welded the original seatbelt anchor point onto the new inner sill

I had cut all the old inner sill out the other day, i didnt want to cut too much out at a time which would weaken the shell, so have only cut out what i have to in order to fit the inner sill.

I butt welded the rear end of the inner sill and stitch welded along the top (how it was done originally).

I havent spot welded the door opening as still have to replace the outer sill.

Anyone got a pick of the frontend of the inner sill, so i can see how they should look

Off a fella down in Barry, he does all the shows. He did used to sell on ebay as SUE88 or something but dont see him on there anymore. His number is 01446400548 or 01446739999 Ones home the others work but cant remember which is which. Ive got to get floorpans and splash panels off him soon so if you want i can pick up the inner sills, think they were 17 each.

    Re: Perky's Mk1 RS2000

Had a quiet afternoon so chopped out some dodgy repairs that had been done on the floorpan, then made a small 'exploritary incision' which gradually grew

Fitted the floorpan into position and butt welded it to the tunnel and inner sill. The floorpan didnt cover all the rot i cut out so i'll have to fill the gaps with fresh metal next time.

All ground back with the flap disc.

Also sorted a complete 4dr mk2 out today to butcher for the front chassis legs, anyone know if there is any difference between the mk1 and mk2 chassis rails?

    Re: Perky's Mk1 RS2000

    Done somemore this afternoon
Cut the rear floorpan section out, it wasnt too bad, but again had patches here and there that were badly welded on. Think they just covered rust over making it alot worse in the longrun .

Welded the new section in, still have to grind back welds and repair the section at the rear of the inner sill and put afew patches up front where the front floor pan wasnt big enough, then this sides done

    Re: Perky's Mk1 RS2000

Done a little bit over the last 2 weeks, started filling some of the gaps in around the new floorpan.

Then i started to chop afew bit from my donor car, believe it or not this car was only taken off the road in 1998 and was a class winning road rally car. Looks alot worse for wear now but still has some very solid bits.

Chopped afew usefull bits out. (still has afew solid bits eg: heater plenum, bulkhead, tunnel if anyone wants them)

Now just got to chop the rest of the bad bits out and fit these good sections

    Re: Perky's Mk1 RS2000

    Dragged up from page 20!
Finally found some time to have a look at the Escort
After looking at some of his work in the resto section and his use of a jig to keep everything nice and aligned i spoke to James at South West Restos about doing the floor and chassis rails. He recommended going for Expressed panels full floor sections and after afew days i decided as its a genuine RS it would look a better job than the seperate panels all welded together. So guess what my lovely wife got me for xmas .
I finally collected the roof skin from Rhys (Mexicosworth) that i'd been meaning to collect since the start of 2011

I knew the inner wings had been repaired so i stripped all the cruddy paint off, they have had wing rails, strut tops and quite afew patches in places. I think they can be saved but im going to fit Expressed panels full lenth strut tops. The front chassis legs are fooked however so they'll need replacing.

    Before

After (with a coat of primer to stop any rust)

The bulkhead has rotted in a strange place, where it meets the tunnel right where the foot mounted screen wash switch is. But the bulkhead lip is in good condition atleast, mind you there prob afew holes under the heater bubble.
So i've got afew more bits to strip off the shell, then its going on the trailer for a visit to South West Restos for James to have a look.

    Re: Perky's Mk1 RS2000

My wife came home from dropping the kids off at school to find a great big parcel left outside the front of my house, (just glad she wasnt out all day as it may not of been there for long with all the pikeys around here!) Still cant believe the couriers just left nearly 400 worth of panels outside

Cant wait to see these fitted now

    Re: Perky's Mk1 RS2000

Got the mk1 loaded up on the trailer today ready for a trip to see James (oddy) at South west resto's.
Felt abit sad seeing it out in the day light, made the rust look alot worse than what it did in the poorly lit barn .
Managed to find my way to Oddy's dispite my sat nav packing up Had a look round some of his current projects, very impressed with his work Can see my mk1 is in good hands.
Afew panels i left with him.

    Evening all,
got the RS in the workshop yesterday, first job, tackle the roof which has seen much better days!

Only one thing for it, turn it into a soft top for the summer!
