Question Different reverse position on Ford box

Just a quick question for all you Ford guys,

what type of 4 speed has a reverse right and back (next to 4th) You also have to push down for 1st/2nd.

All other boxes I have seen have reverse next to first (left and up)

my friend has that gearbox in his mk1 escort and has been told it’s a rare one.

    thanks

2000e has reverse in that position but they don't use a system where you push down for 1st and 2nd. The 2000e system is called a "knock-through" reverse as it requires a bit of effort to overcome the springs to select reverse.

Come to think of it I've never heard of that on any other box, and it doesn't make sense to me. Usually reverse needs something a bit unusual (ie push down / lift up etc) to make it hard to mistakenly select reverse while travelling forwards. I can't think 1st/2nd needs that option?

Well I asked him about the 1st and second thing as I didn’t believe him, so he pulled over and let me try it, it definitely has a ‘gate’ or what ever you would call it to be able to move the gearstick over to the left two gears. I had to push really hard down and go to the left with the stick, goes into gear easily. It then ‘pops’ back up into neutral/3rd/4th. Then as I say push down and rear right to go to reverse, so it makes me think it isn’t a worn box as all the gears are nice and no crunches/whines etc.

it is a 1600 xflow and a South African import how ever it is not a ‘standard’ car as it has a big bore manifold and bigger exhaust, I have been trying to google it but can’t find any info.

    Thanks

I haven’t managed to get any pics as yet but it’s an import mk1 escort with red 1600 badges, he has found on the internet that this is a special model with a different gearbox and diff.... I can’t find anything myself though. He thinks it was a special edition for the last of the mk1’s built.

Have you ever heard of this?

    Thanks

I had a 3 rail 2000e gearbox fitted to a Twink we built in the late 70's and it was the like the one Honky described. No need to lift the lever for first and second as there was no collar or spring loaded sysem on the stick. Knock the lever over to fourth and back to select reverse.

It looks like a very early type gearbox with the square drain plug. Are there any rods or linkages on the side of the box? A photo of the gearstick under the rubber gaitor might also help someone in identifying it.

This is the number on the side, I can find a similar number on a cortina gearbox but not one that has that exact code.

    Thanks

Ford Type 3 single rail gearbox.
Nothing rare about it other than they weren't fitted to UK cars as far as I'm aware, possibly also not fitted to foreign cars from factory hence your friend claiming it's rare. I wouldn't get overly excited about it, unless it's got 2000e ratios. Even then it's not rare in the grand scheme of gearboxes.

I had such a gearbox fitted to a Mk2 Cortina 1600 over 40 years ago. It had wide ratios and was fitted with a long stick that came out of the transmission tunnel to the rear of the maincase and reverse was over and back near fourth.

We had a Corsair with a similar gearbox but fitted with a remote gear linkage that put the gearstick in the usual position, reverse was over and back nr second which made it very easy to go into when trying to select second gear quickly. A nice close gate on the gearstick with the remote fitted.

Sorry, made a mistake, the gearbox looks like the late type (magnet in the bottom of 'box) 3 rail gearbox. So it could be a 2000e gearbox ie semi-close ratios. Only Mk1 Escort Mexico, Twincam and RS1600 came with a proper 2000e gearbox. I don't think any standard mk1 escorts came with a standard ratio 3 rail gearbox.

2000e gearbox had reverse across 3rd/4th and back towards driver.

To clarify all Ford 3 rail gearboxes with remote lever at the rear of the gearbox (ie cast into the housing) had reverse across 3rd/4th and back towards driver whatever ratio was fitted.

Re: Different reverse position on Ford box

The Ford Corsair 1500 3 rail gearbox had a bolt on remote lever extension and not one cast into the tailhousing like the 2000e one had, reverse was over and back next to second. We fitted the engine and gearbox into a grass track car we built in the 70's and I remember when changing down into second gear it was very easy to go into the reverse gate. The problem was solved along with a better set of ratios by fiting a 2000e gearbox.

Re: Different reverse position on Ford box

Thankyou for all of your replies and information, when my friend bought the import he was told by the importer that it had a very rare gearbox, I hadn’t seen one in an old ford like that so I just wanted to see if it was rare or
    Where it was from.

Thanks again for your help, much appreciated.
