Re: New shells,, yes or no??? Mk1 and mk2

If I was doing a mk2 I'd happily buy one
Don't see a problem in a new chinese shell over a rotten, repaired , possibly not even square uk shell
So even if it needs a further 100 hours going over it and sorting out any gaps or lines etc or even a bit of stitch welding here and there it's no different than doing it to one that's just been took off a spit after 500 hours work and has had every repair panel fitted
It's perfect for the market it's aimed at , rally boys , track boys or people who are happy with it to re shell a road car
It's been said above a couple of times, if you don't want one or have any queries about quality etc , don't buy one , but someone had made a massive achievement there ! And regarding ford quality over modern replicas, you have to take into consideration the way tooling and equipment has gone forward in 40 years, even down to the smallest of detail , is a modern Chinese spot weld better or worse than a 40 year old ford one?

i agree with all, i know for sure at that price if i were going to build a mk2 race car i would start with one of these shells, to me it makes far more sense than paying a fortune to buy and repair a rusty shell, and who knows it might even go some way to stop cars disappearing

For the rally boys and someone making a racecar they will be perfect.
I just cant see many selling to people wanting to make a standard car, you'll need a really rotten one for all the bits (and there isnt many rotten ones left)
Then you have the problem of getting it on the road, buy a ID or get it tested and do it properly.

So why not just buy a mint import for around the same money and register it.

Still well done to everyone for making it happen, never thought i would ever see a brand new mk2 shell

The kind of conclusion I would like to add here. Some people keep telling the China industry is going to catch us by time. No, not at all, they already passed us long time ago and are ahead of us.

Look at what they can do in a reasonable time. I had many parts build in China over the years. All quality parts, not rubbish. You just have to spend the right money for a good part, if you spend zero to nothing, yes, you receive rubbish.

This shell is really nice done. Also thanks to all who where involved. I hope this way the Escort can stay alive for ever.

Re: New shells,, yes or no??? Mk1 and mk2

I'd rather see a U.K. company producing these, I've been involved in a lot of engineering manufacture case studies recently and there are many projects that are in fact cheaper to keep in the uk and Europe when you take into account shipping and import costs. It's the main purpose of the EU free trade agreement. These agreement are about to also extend to the US which will open up far more reduced cost manufacturing opportunities. I'm never a fan of Chinese products entering our markets. Although this one is small scale, what impact will it have on the guys who make a living restoring these cars. I would much rather see the panels being made and imported and our guys assembling them here. Why not use these Chinese panels and help our guys by involving them in the fabrication.

i agree 100% i would much rather see them made here in the uk. but as a small business owner i can defiantly say the uk is not conducive to such things happening, red tape, employment laws, and a chuck of the population that dont want to work or do not want to work in a "dirty" environment stoop it happening, we live in a world where half of it thinks its their "right" to earn a fortune tapping away on a keyboard, but are horrified at the thought of ACTUALLY working and making something

Re: New shells,, yes or no??? Mk1 and mk2

Completely agree, you should see the helath and safety in the Oil & Gas industry, i would safely say that in the 15years ive worked offshore productivity has around halfed due to the amount of red tape and restriction, the guys who work for me spend around 50% of their day at the desk preparing paperwork and 50% on the tools, its crazy.

Re. the shells, i cant help thinking that a large part of the cost of these shells must be down to shipping and import duty, the increased costs of assembling them here may equate to the same as the shipping and duty, it would be a great business opportunity for some guys to do, a simple jig and some welding equipment, im pretty sure alot of small companies would welcome it, it would be far more cost effective to ship these as a flat pack panel kit, the size of a complete empty shell isnt the best way of making use of container space, unless they are filling the shell with panels. I also reckon they would be far more welcomed by all if our guys were more involved, i have a big issue buying Chinese stuff, if they were assembled here then i would probably buy one, this whole project could be shared and up-scaled, increasing profit and reducing re-sale prices...........all it needs is a properly thought through and prepared business plan. New shells are a fantastic thing but i think this one could be done in a far better way.

Re: New shells,, yes or no??? Mk1 and mk2

Thats not strictly true Onyd, these days we are seeing more and more heavy engineering projects staying within the EU, the fact that the Chinese economy is now shifting from a production based country to a consumer based one is now creating a situ where they are screaming out for western produced products, things are starting to go full circle, i work for a Canadian oil company who are owned by Chinese National Oil Co., i had a very interesting conversion with a Chinese manager a few weeks ago, he said that previously you could chart China's econmic growth with increased energy usage year on year (their growth was almost soley linked to manufacturing), he said that what they are seeing now is continued growth but without the relationship to energy, growth charts are increasing away from energy usage charts which are starting to flat line.......the reason is that China are now becoming a net investor, they are shifting into investing in other countries, Britain being one, its the whole theory around the UK Govt awarding them the contract for the new nuclear power station. It will take a long time but we will start seeing a shift away from China's domination. The key is to support businesses at home to help the move, the power lies with the consumer.

    Hi Graham,

Have you stolen my words are are we just thinking exact the same?

This is what I keep telling everybody. There is more than enough work for all of us here in EU but if people don't want to do "this" or "that" because to dirty to heavy and easier and cheaper to live at cost of others, we have a problem. I'm also a one man small business, not seldom have to work until 2 'o clock in the night to cover an error made during the day. Our social system is a little bit to social. I can use a man working for me in the workshop but I'm sure he will gain a lot more each hour as I do and will not work as many hours. If he does not like the job anymore, start to bring me headaches it will cost me even more to get rid of him and I will also have to pay to find him a new job he probably is not looking for. That's live. Some can live and not work but one day we will all go down if we don't chance this.

Yes I would also like to see it build in UK or Belgium but where do you want to weld it? I had plans to go to an industrial estate to expand the company but I'm not allowed because I could not put a number on it when they asked me how much negative effect my dyno has on the environment!!!! Well, in China today they may not come out because of smog, tomorrow it should be better, more wind. Well I'm still far under this level. They should find a balance for all of us.

Those like me and many others (yes Graham, you included) if we count the hours and effort we put into it, we must be complete nuts, totally crazy, otherwise you don't do what we are doing here. Only, nobody told us and government want us to continue.

I think we went off topic !!!!

I just wanted to say it's more and more difficult to find space and permissions to work. In China pretty easy. In Belgium we had several foundries for alloy. Now a hand full are left. The rest has closed the doors, mainly because they could not cope with the newer strict regulations. Same for zinc plating etc...

Body shops, in Belgium, if they hear "paint" they turn nuts. I believe it's so strict today you can only spray a car with clean water !!!!!

That's what I was trying to explain.

Recently spoke to a company who are in the final stages of producing new mk1 escort shells, they'll be available this time next year (approx) they have 4 more pressings to make then they.ll be going in to production, sounds like there going to be made here in the UK.

My friend just bought one of the roof skins from the company supplying the new shells from China, you should see how shocking the fit is, i would steer clear of these and stick to the Magnum stuff only. Check out SW Restos page on Facebook for pics.

Quality looks fine to me if you plan on fitting it to one of the chinese shells - it'll fit right on! Just how far out are all the panels on the shells then if that roof panel fits!! I bet all the panels are unique and completely different to Ford ones! Good way to get around copyright!

wouldnt of thought so, whole cars would be a different matter.

dont really understand all this safety stuff, how safe are rusty cars that have been continuously patched up for 40 years? would they pass a safety test?

well the safety issue would be in connection with insurance i'd of thought .we all know how they look for any excuse not to pay out if they can.so shells put onto road cars could be an issue don't you think ? cars made from ford,no matter how long ago or patched up would have no issue but a re-made new shell not made by ford ?

Re: New shells,, yes or no??? Mk1 and mk2

strikes me thats looking for problems that are unlikely to exist in the real world. there are zillions of parts in restored car which are not safety tested as such, that is certainly the case with diy brake pipes, probably a far bigger risk than a replacement bodyshell

the fact is the bulk of these are likely to end up as rally cars so everyday insurance is unlikely to be an issue, unless your going to say to them that you have rebuilt a car using a dodgy shell!

They never crash tested them then so why now? And on the same subject wouldnt a newly restored car with virtually all new panels replaced need crash testing too? No...mot man says as long as he's happy with the integrity of the shell theres no problem. As Graham said people put massively upped powerplants in cars and make up their own brake systems and that seems more problematic..

Anyway if these new shells arent up to scratch they wont shift simple.

the point i'm making is if you had an accident on the road would any investigation from a claim void your insurance, if found out new shell was used ? of course nobody here knows this now but i'd prefer to have some idea if the shell would be ok just incase.

Not if you notified the insurers that it was reshelled, which would be the sensible thing to declare everything as with all policies. Whether its safer than a 40 year old patched up basket case is a moot point. If the insurers found out it was a new shell and you didnt declare it well thats up to you.

Because MOT standards are in place for repairing previously safety assessed vehicles...,.i know its a bit of a croc of shit but at least you are starting with something which carries certification....a chinese shell has nowt, i can pretty much guarantee an insurance company would wriggle out of any claim if you crashed one and they found out it was a Chinese copy

Nobody seems to have come forward to show one built up etc I think it's safe to say these will be rally cars with said cars ID anyway....

Looks like a limited run as new shells don't seem to be advertised anymore?

Re: New shells,, yes or no??? Mk1 and mk2

    Evening all,
It's true, I have one of the new roof panels at my workshop, it's not very good, I won't fit it.
I have some new likes on my Facebook page offering pictures of one fitted but they haven't turned up yet.
As I have said in my replies it takes a big set of balls to make new shells and I wish them the best of luck.
Hopefully the roof I have is a bad pressing/missed some stages as it's terrible.
The customer was contacting them today to ask for up to standard replacement or a refund.
I really am happy to be proven wrong.
    Cheers,
    James.
