Would be interested to know the price difference (be it up or down) of shipping a shell or 2 directly to Australia rather than letting them all go to the UK......

Take my hat off to ya mate.....well done so far.

im off out there again to see wats cookin,, well allready the euro took a tumble and cost me an extra 7 k on the wings, but thats the international currency market for u, it could have as easily swung the other way,
im not havin much joy on the shells as in interest,, but as pointed out the bigger players should have a fair interest,.
    im not done yet,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
and they can go anywhere if i make them,, not just uk and ireland,,

Re: New shells,, yes or no??? Mk1 and mk2

    Any updates ?

I've been speaking to a few people at different rallies, etc over the last few months & they think that £4k for a shell is reasonable. One lad had just bought a good LHD shell for £3500 & spent a good bit of time & money converting it.

Any news would be good !!

    Cheers,
    David

I was watching an old Top Gear the other day-i think it was the one with the Cobras-they mentioned once the cars been out of production for 15 years (i think it was) there's no copyright issues with regards the shells.

Re: New shells,, yes or no??? Mk1 and mk2

i had to sign up just to give a little input. i was so exctited to read that this could be done, its seems almost surreal

the escort scene definately needs new shells. lets be honest there are definately limited numbers, the more the rally boys smash these cars, soon there will be a very limited ammount origionals left.

i say go ahead and do it, call it a kit car, or whatever you like, save some money and get at least 5 or 10 shells over here into the UK, and watch how fast they sell! its a no brainer... they will be snatched up!

and on the plus side it seems like a win win situation, it gives us a break with regards to keeping the origional shells.. er' well origional, as they wont all be taken by the big rally companies,
its good for them because they get brand new shells they can use, and it leaves the origional shells floating around for the escort enthusiast like ourselves that want to keep things pure.

if you dont do this i bet somebody else will, and i hate to hear all the stubborn people that are saying no to this idea. i know they are not made by ford from back in the day and they are brand new, but an escort is an escort regardless of where or when it came from, and i would rather have one made by a company in china and keep the scene alive for another- however many years on top of that, instead of watching all the origionals slowly rot away/ crash/ or dissapear and see this scene die down to a small number of rare garaged cars that never see tarmac anymore.

Re: New shells,, yes or no??? Mk1 and mk2

just done a bit of research and there is a company in Turkey producting new mk2 escort shells by hand. the cost is around 14k.

check out this thread over here: http://bbs.rallyesportescorts.co.uk/...ad.php?t=39992

alot of priase to them from forum members, as its all hand made shells, but the concept of new shells to purchase is definately loved

Evobda2, do you go on the RS Motorsport Forum.? I tried to get support for this over here and I could not get any support, all I got was heaps of excuses such as not allowed by cams, not road legal, would be stopped at port, refused customs etc, etc etc.

I just spend 3k on an imported shell from Aussie, i would definatly have spent more on a new one. The mk1 & 2 Escorts are legendary once they're gone they're gone for good! Good luck

well.. i proved i could do grilles and wings,, the factory i had chosen for the shells over the one that did the wings was like comparing david sutton cars with some guy workin under a railway arch,, so there would be no problem at all doing shells,
there is a discussion on various forums about this, but alot is negative,, i mean who seen the one on scottish old skool fords,, wtf is with them up there,,
either i get an intersted 300 or i get (if possible) big companies involved....

The discussion on Scottish Old Skool Escorts was very, very strange......anyone that is into Escorts would want shells to be made again but I think the problem is that some people with 'big money' Mk2's think that the 'new' shells will de-value them, hence the kind of discussions on SOSE.

You've proven you can do it with the grilles & wings, lets hope the shells will come off......one way or another.

Anyway, I'll give you a call during the week.

    Cheers,
    David

the new wings will obviously bring down the price of nos wings, but i would think to the 'originality first people' they would still be worth that bit more.i can't see how new shells would have that much of an impact on escort prices, how many could be produced and sold in say 1 year? hope things pick-up later in the year and the shells might be on the go for next year

Re: New shells,, yes or no??? Mk1 and mk2

I am in for a mk1 shell ( deposit scheme ) as soon as there is a binding contract for both parties. However, would not it better to produce the most difficult and expensive panels first ( inner wings, full bulkheads, bulkhead tops, complete floor pans, front chasis members, roof, rear quarters, etc ) to test the capability of the producer and the market ?
As an investor of the mexico and std. Wings, you should know much better than us the difficulty of getting a top quality panels out of China with this kind of production technique.
I am sure Ford did not spend this much time for the production of their steel panels at that time.

Re: New shells,, yes or no??? Mk1 and mk2

well yes hawk, i see ur point, but as i wasnt in a position initially to choose where the wings were made, and when it took a week of email , phone callls and internet chat to simply explain why one wing had a rolled arch and others didnt u can see why it took forever,
but as i have already visited china and the industrial region in question i can assure anyone that the factory i would use tio make shells is a totally different animal to the one that makes the wings, but now that they have made a few hundred they do know whats expected,
of course a contract would have to be in order as it would be with the factory and me also,, to safeguard us all,,
i know it can be done,, just when,,,???????

I fully understand what you mean but I still think it would be good a good test to have some of the parts mentioned at a reasonable price prior to full production of a bodyshell.
I am going to buy few sets of wings for my projects and for resale but I am pretty sure that they are top quality after this much effort. However, inner wings, bulkheads kind of complicated parts may not be so easy to produce the same quality.

How many people you have got now for the deposit scheme ?

I guess British Motor Heritage would be able to supply you with some idea on numbers of remade MGB shells. That would give you an indication of the market i guess (?)

You might want to know that these shells will not be possible to get registered for road use in Norway due to our laws. However I know that a few MGBs are running new shells in Norway, they just haven't been reported by the owner and the local authority don't know how to spot them either. So if yor remade shells were as close to an orginal as possible I guess the market would be bigger then if you had them modified in such a way that they were easy to spot.

Some of the escorts out there have so many bits welded in that there is not much of the origianl car left anyhow

Re: New shells,, yes or no??? Mk1 and mk2

    Hi all

Speaking from a Tooling Makers point of view, you have already made the most complicated panel for the MK1 Escort, the wings. Apart from the size of the quarter panels (including the door opening), roof, floor and bulk head panel they are all easy pressing, between 1-3 tools for each panel, basing this on the panels being laser cut as the wings have been. I would have thought if you could bring the quater panels to market next you should be able to cost these at about the same price as the standard wings, making them very sellable. I think this panel could possable be made using 1 tool per side too, which should make it quit simply to bring to market compared to the wings.

Think of the repairs some poeple do to this panel, replacement outer sill, wheel arch, A-post and tank/spare wheel well repair. All this could be done with the replacement of 1 panel, no filler, no blending, just drilling out spot welds. God I would have loved these to be avalible for cars I've restored.

I used to have a silver harrier back in the day.

And i would be very interested in a Mk2 shell John

thankyou it would be great for the scene i think as new metal on a mk2 i think that people that want to spend 100k plus on a full steam ahead group 4 car with all the trimmings you know zf box a Bdg a proper renifened rally car would most likely just buy a new shell for peace of mind everything is new and just dont have to take ages cleaning stonechip and under seal of and rot.

There are some free file hosting sites that you could try. I'm not a tech nerd so do not know specifics. Can anybody help him as I wanna read this?
