    Cosworth N/A lifters help.

    Hi Guys,
So a a Cosworth N/A with high lift camshafts needs solid lifters so I keep reading.
My question is why? Zetect using high lift cams seem to use Hydro lifters.
Also nearly every new or modern car turbo or not seem to use hydro lifters, so why does the Y/B need to convert to solid?
Its a genuine question as I really dont need the agro and noise of solid lifters on a mildy tuned roadgoing Y/B.
Has anybody tried a fast road/rally type cams with hydros?
    What would happen?
    Confussed.!

Because YB hydraulic lifters will lock up with little more than std lift cams, also the opening acceleration of different cams will cause them to lock/hydraulic, same as if you over rev an engine with them, i learned that the hard way in a Westfiled with an XE when i missed a gear and bent 15 valves at Kirkiston in Ireland.

    Thanks for your reply Erikmex.
Understand what your saying but why is it just YB's?
Surely rally type cam in any 16V engine with hydro lifters would do the same?

Lots of cars with hydro lifters have to convert to solid at some point, each cars setup will have different limits though.

the main reason most yb cams run solid lifters is the cams are old cosworth BD profiles which were all solid.

newman do fast road hydraulic yb cams.

i have a set of newman hydraulic cams in my mates vw ABF engine it has done has 3 full rr mapping sessions and 4 seasons of rallying on it reving it to 8k with no issues

I was told by my engine builder : don't go over 7.5k with hydraulic ones, otherwise they break.
That's a shame when your engine can show a plot that want to go higher and you're blocked by just some small lifters.
But I didn't know that it requires different cams w/o hydro ones.

Yes, they hydraulic or lock up at high revs, thats why you can bend valves

these days a lot of engines will go to 8k or more on hydraulics, probably helped by modern oils being thinner

I’ve always considered them the weak point on the top end of an engine that’s going to be revved hard

Milder cams are fine on Hydraulics. Like Graham said, a lot of profiles are just done mechanical. I usually don't like going over 240@50 on cam spec with anything hydraulic, but anything under that I have used on multiple occasions with no issues.
