Look at diagram, wiper motor (no 80).
Right most wire (br/ws) us the earth for the motor.
2nd wire from right is connected to the low-speed terminal of the motor via the wiperswitch (when in zero position).
This "switch" inside the motor keeps the low-speed-terminal also at earth when the wiper are in park (motor short circuited so it doesn't move).
When wipers are not in park and switch is off the switch puts 12volts (middle wire in diagram) onto the low-speed-terminal which keeps the motor turning until the switch moves over and earths the motor again.
Left most wire of motor is the high-speed-terminal; 2nd from left is the low-speed-terminal.
When you put +12volts onto both these wire the motor goes into high speed.
    Are you with me???

    Now to switch (85).
If you want a single switch to operate the wipers (but still want that they to go "park" automatically) get a single-pole switchover switch.
Put wire "gn" (from terminal 53) onto the middle terminal of the new switch; put wire "bl/br" (from terminal 31b) onto the bottom terminal of new switch; and put wire "sw/vi" (from terminal 54) onto the bottom connection of new switch.
If you now operate the new switch the wipers will move in slow speed; switch them off and wipers will go into park-position.
    Easy peasy.

I am now using as suggested, an on/off/on switch to obtain the 2 speeds.

The photos above show the O.E. plugs, Vertical pins are Blk/Violet & Brown, Horizontal Brown/White.

The other 2 x photos show the wiper motor with the 3 pins, and the power supply plug. Red/Green

There is no Brown/Blue wire, as shown in the manual, and I am not sure if I would need connect both wires from the 2 pin plug in the 3rd photo from the left.

If anyone can offer any further advice on how to connect this to the 3 position toggle switch, I would be very grateful?

I also found this diagram of the column switch, but I haven't got a column switch anymore to check the positions!

I said that you can use a single-pole switchover switch to use instead of the normal wiperswitch, that's not an on/off/on switch.
Will see what can I do ..

If you want one switch for the 2 speeds (high-speed, off, low-speed) then you need a switch with 2 sets of contacts in each position that are not connected to eachother.
And there isn't a switch that has that.
You can do it with 2 switches: first switch as I described earlier and a second switch which connects "sw/vi" from the first switch to the "rt" (red) wire in the last photo (2-pin plug) when the switch is in the on-position.
With the first switch in the off position nothing happens. Flip this switch and the wipers go in low-speed. Flip 2nd switch and wipers go in high-speed.

Please check the drawing, which is probably completely wrong and let me know your thoughts?

    Uhhrrmm no.
Saved the diagram-pic, draw some switches in it and scanned it again.
I left the rest of the loom as is. If you start from scratch then both black/violet wires need a +12 volt supply via a fuse (not on scan) and the wiper needs an earth via the brown/white wire (in scan tied to all the other earth).
Remember that when the switch is in the on position the centre terminal is connected to the bottom terminal!

Ok, please let me know if I interpreted your drawing in the right way?
Note: None of the original loom exists.

Anyway I made a drawing for you.
It's slightly different that the other one so forget all my previous efforts!
Switch 1 is a switch-over (cross-over) switch; in the off position the centre terminal is connected to the top one.
In the on position the centre terminal is connected to the bottom one.

Many thanks for your time on this.

Would you say that 10amp switches would be adequate for this???

Re: Mk2 Escort wiper motor/switch wiring

I would use 25 amp switches.

Re: Mk2 Escort wiper motor/switch wiring

Hi, I am intending to re-fit the headlights and indicators to my mk2 escort, but i'll have to start from scratch, a none of the original loom or switches exist.

Would anyone happen to have a wiring diagram that they could post up that I could use to the above?

    Any help is appreciated.

    Many thanks

Re: Mk2 Escort wiper motor/switch wiring

managed to do it had to use 2 changeover relays one for each speed to disconnect the park on each sweep as it blows a fuse on the speed without a relay as it passes the park position on each sweep
