Which duratec engine/sump for Mk2 Escort rally car

Hi There Ive just found this site and Im looking into converting my Pinto to 2Lt Duratec in the next few months.
My question is which engine is it best to start with,Im not looking for mega power somewhere around 200 bhp will be good to start so do I need the ST150 engine?I intend to run it on throttle bodies & decent exhaust manifold but hoping not to too many engine mods to start with.
My other question is this :- Does anybody make a sump wet or dry sump which allows the 2lt Duratec to be dropped straight into a Mk2 Escort without changing the WCXM for one with lowered steering rack mounts? And finally can you fit a Duratec into a Mk 2 Escort without modifying the bulkhead?
    Thanks in Advance
    Martin

    Hi Martin,

If it were me doing this, which it very much will be in a few years' time, I'd be speaking to Steve Broughton at SBD Motorsport...... www.sbdev.co.uk

They do everything you need to transplant a duratec 2.0L into a MK2 Escort, from the chassis mount kit, to the bellhousings, exhausts, throttle bodies, ecu, loom etc. The 2.0L is an excellent engine, and has more potential than the 2.3 according to Steve who has done back to back development on both and chosen to go with the 2.0L himself. Can do several kits, anywhere from a basic throttle body package giving 203bhp, add cams and you have 214, add some pistons and rods and there's 235! Basically can just continue to add bits to it all the way up to 290+bhp. SBD also do Escort specific dry sump kits for them too.

My brother has one in his car, the all singing all dancing 290+bhp version, you can see it in action in my videos..... http://www.youtube.com/user/glendowner

Also, have a look at his thread on here to see how simple the install is..... http://www.turbosport.co.uk/showthre...c-installation You'll see that he went from N/A cossie too, which is pretty much the same swap you'll be doing in most respects.

Give Steve at SBD a call on 0208 391 0121, he's always ready to answer any questions you may have regarding the conversion. Most of the parts were developed using my brother's car as a base, so it's all tailored for the MK2 escort too.

hope this helps, and from my point of view you're definitely making the best choice for conversion.

The torque curve from those webcon kits is awful, the power curve isn't particularly smooth either. Compare it to the SBD graph.... http://www.sbdev.co.uk/Duratec/Durat...ttle%20kit.htm

Agree. I have a 2ltr Duratec from JRE race engines. 280HP. He has worked closely with SBD in the past, and probably biuilds the best engines in UK. Now building 2.5 ltr Vauxhalls.

Yeah, the JRE engines are pretty awesome. Steve builds the best Duratec 2.0L in my opinion, can certainly claim the most horsepower and torque from one. He doesn't touch the 2.3 or 2.5.

How much would your man charge for a 2ltr Duratec. Complete turn key motor.

Honestly mate I've never priced one up, and I wouldn't want to guess. However if you're talking about a basic stock engine on throttles for 203bhp, then you're looking at approx 3.5k without the donor engine to get it in the car. Again, like I say though, that's a guess.

Thanks for the replies,I will give SBD a call. Id still like to know whether any sumps clear the standard MK2 world cup crossmember and which engine is the best base.
    Thanks again

With the Duratec you'll need to chassis mount anyway, as the engine mount points are in the wrong place to use a WCXM with mounts. So you use a cross member without the mount positions. My brother has a pace dry sump on his using this setup, and I don't think he needed to modify the cross member at all, but I will check.

Re: Which duratec engine/sump for Mk2 Escort rally car

Did a fair bit of research on this to fit the Duratec in the MK1. First and foremost, I was looking for bang for the buck. Both Dave Colledge at Retro-Ford and Steve at SBD, do great turn key solutions for the Duratec into the MK1 or MK2, however IMHO they are both quite expensive.

I have been building Duratecs now for 6 years and for me the best value and quality for Duratec's has always been at Raceline. Pete McEwan, the engineer at Raceline has supplied and built many solutions for the Caterham factory and race cars, he is an excellent engineer and never exaggerates his product. Currently Pete is getting 310bhp on Mountunes Dyno on a 2.3. Caterham now use Racelines product instead of Cosworth on pretty well all their cars, including their integral dry sump, which I am using. However this will not fit a standard cross member.

The only limitation with Raceline is that they are not geared up for the Escort, so there are other options to be considered. Roger Carroll of Adelaide AUS, has a nice solution to put a Duratec on a standard crossmember, which he is currently racing to great success, with about 290bhp. He also does a bell housing, water-rail and dry sump pan to go with the standard cross member and a RX7 gearbox. Really is well worth looking at this, if you don't want to chassis mount.

If you look at my resto thread you will see that I have gone with the Retro Ford WCXM and mounts, with hindsight, I would chassis mount it, but if I was doing a relativly low powered Duratec (less than 240bhp), I would go with the Australian solution.

Yes, I can provide you a dry sump to drop the Duratec straight into a standard Escort engine compartment on original crank centreline and back-of-block using the original round Pinto rubber mounts. The spin-on oil filter still clears the crossmember so you don't need to remote mount it.
I can also do a water outlet elbow/side pipe which doesn't need any change to the firewall.

Re: Which duratec engine/sump for Mk2 Escort rally car

apologies for digging up an old thread but im looking at which engine would be best for my mk1 escort,
i thought a 2.0 vauxhall XE was the way to go but then somebody on another forum mentioned the duratec.

Im after a good reliable 200bhp without spending a fortune, what are the pro's and cons over each engine and which would you use?
which duratec do i need as a starting point? ive been looking them up online and there are loads of variants

    regards, Steve

ST150 engine 2008 on with the high flow head casting number RF3S4G or RF6S4E this can be worth 10+15 bhp over the early head

Yep, late model 2.0 (2008 on) all of which should have the Hi-Port head, throttle bodies and rest stock will give you about 200bhp.
Raceline Cams and springs will take you up to 226bhp on stock rods and pistons, if you put valve cut outs in them.

That's a Zetec buddy completey the wrong engine.
The ST170 is badged as a duratec bits it's just a fancy Zetec still a good motor but not a duratec.
You should be able to hit the 200hp make from a standard duratec if you get the right engine and spend the money on the right inlet/exhust management

They did n`t make the ST 170 in 2009. There are plenty of Breakers on E Bay with Complete Duratec Engines from 200.

The big expence comes with the parts for the conversion, Sump, Bellhousing, Water rail, Management etc.

PowerTorque Engineering can supply you a brand new (correct spec) 2.0 or 2.5 for around 1450-1550+vat, that is where most of the engine builders get theirs from

Putting a zetec turbo on my escort mk2

    Hello,

This is my first post here. I am currently building my escort and have just bought a mondeo silver top to throw in my cort! As these engines have some major problems about the oil pump I decided to built it up with a dry sump.

Is there anyone here placed on or similar zetecss(duratec) in an escort mk2 or mk1. If yes, and obviously with a dry sump which make did you fit and if there has been any alterations in the sump, cross member or the car itself.

P.S. The engine is going to be chassis mounted. The engine support which were with the crossmember are removed already.

    Thanks and Regards

I used the Raceline integral pump Dry sump to good effect, by far and away the cheapest option and no external belts to worry about. Have a look at my thread for details and pictures
