Atlas Axle diff side/carrier bearing clearance / preload
I`m building an atlas axle at the moment and have searched internet for ages trying to find the clearance for the side bearings.
Despite how popular these axles are there is not much info out there
pinion preload and gear mesh are no problem I can deal with that ok, its the carrier bearings clearance that has me wondering
The haynes capri manual advises 0.006" clearance on the carrier bearings but other forums and posts iv`e seen some folk are running all different clearances with some advising a preload of -0.003" tight... and using a case expander to get the carrier into the housing.. which seems crazy to me, would the thermal expansion of the carrier not kill the bearings ?, I could understand a preload on the pinion bearings.. but don`t get why on the carrier bearings
Can any atlas diff guys advise what is correct ?
thanks

Re: Atlas Axle diff side/carrier bearing clearance / preload
looks like the 0.006" clearance quoted in the manual actually refers to spider gears not the carrier bearings, so is -0.003" correct after all ?
