    Re: 1st ever welds

i've not tried .6 wire but with .8 i'd probably be on very similar settings on 1.2mm steel - 150e turbo i think

wire speed now down to 3.9 did blow 1 hole as i was a bit slow to move the tip but think its better ,then went on to add a very small patch thumb nail size to the car

Butt weld is best for presentation, but as your new to welding you will struggle! Keep practicing on scraps first, dont take this the wrong way but i wouldnt want that plate you have done below my feet! Keep practicing and once you have got the hang of it a bit better then start on the car

From the last pic of the test i would say a touch more wire, also get some welders gloves and keep hold of the end of the gun with your spare hand to keep it neat and control your movement better. Also dont be afraid of the spatter when it burns you as it can be offputting enough to make you weld badly

Good stuff, many people do the bare minumum to get started and tbh it just holds you back! The most important thing to start is getting the hours in and getting to know your welder and resist the temptation start welding anything that needs to be done well Trust me even when you are done with training and you think you can weld well, once you get round the rest of the car and back to the first couple of plates youll have learnt so much along the way that youll want to chop out the early ones and redo them, thats why you should always start underneath!!

^^^ you wouldn't beleive how true that is

& don't be afriad to chop lots out aswell. i know it's tempting to just put stupid little patches on all over the place but it's often easier & neater to replace panels or part panels

    Re: 1st ever welds

Yes mate 2 plates, each one butted onto each panel to keep it looking right and then plug welded the 2 together by drilling 6-8mm holes and filling with weld

Also dont weld yours as shit as mine is there Thats a prime example of the early plate you wish you hadnt done!!! I started welding in the garage with a scrap and did 2 runs and then started on the car!! I think this was the 2nd plate i had ever done, you can see it now when you look at the car! Good as a fingerprint, shit as a seamless repair
