Hi All
Quick question, is the ST170 an interference fit engine?
If the timing belt has gone, are you in for a whole world of hurt?
Many thanks,

Yes it is mate
absolutely you will have a load of bent valves
that would be a good guess but in this instance I'm pleased to say not
A guy is selling a SVT focus (ST170 for you guys) with some weird history of all four pots with low compression. Then he changed the timing belt, along with all the normal things you would do at the same time. Said he timed it up(?) and it was working/running great (bought it with low compression as told to him so he carried out that work)
He then supposedly sat it for summer and when he came to run it again he thinks the timing must have come out of adjustment some how(?) So when he fired it up he thinks he bent some valves because the compression was low when he checked it?
He says it does start occasionally if it's warm and it wants to??!!
I'm a bit perplexed how any of this makes sense

low compression might be because its always been timing wrong, but i somehow doubt it. do a cylinder leakage test, that should rule bent valves in or out
