    Re: Choosing type9 gearbox

No standard box will cope well with 200bhp
The V6 box is the stronger and the strongest has a larger bearing which has a bearing carrier separate and proud of the gearbox casing under the input shaft.
If you do indeed have a 200bhp Pinto then you would have spent a good deal of money already so I would recommend a heavy duty V6 box from BGH Geartech where you can specify the ratios and have a short input shaft fitted negating the use of a bellhousing spacer

What about going down the rx8 box conversion route?

    The T5 would be ideal

I recommend BGH geartech, they can make the gearbox for you, no std T9 will cope !

    Re: Choosing type9 gearbox

All rally guys here run T9 and Quaife kit. Never seen any real problems. Even the BMW guy's run T9 behind there 6 cyl 2800 cc engines. 6 cylinders are less aggressive for gearboxes.

It is not power that brake gearboxes, it is torque and the 2ltr Pinto will not make more max torque with 200 Bhp as with 190. My 2300 was also running T9 and 210 Bhp with a lot more torque as the 2 ltr can ever make.

BGH t9s are a good box, it's recommended to use a sprung clutch plate otherwise 3 RD gear is the weakest link.

T5 is a terrible box for a 200hp Pinto, the ratios are all wrong and they dont like high revs.

The one in a Cosworth has a 2.95 first gear and the rest similar to a standard type 9
Costs more than a V6 Type 9 but stronger, I was looking at one as it’s cheaper than a 2.9 first gear mod

    Re: Choosing type9 gearbox

Nope, the ratios are very different to a type 9, wider, 5th is a 0.80 for starters. Type 9 doesn’t have good ratios either. T5 ratios are very wide designed for big torque where close ratios aren’t needed. Plus the bearings don’t like high revs in them either. Defo not a box for a tuned Pinto. Standard type 9 is a crap box for a 200hp pinto too, even with a longer 1st.

I recall going to the RS owners day at Donington when it was in it's hey day in the early nineties. There were at least half a dozen T5's on a Trade stand and I think they were no more than a couple of hundred quid apiece. Today they must be a very sortafter box.
