Check the timing, if it is too far advanced it will do that on tickover.

Ignition timing too late and/or mixture too rich.

I thought a lean mixture burns hotter

When the exhaust headers are glowing red hot it means there is petrol still burning in the exhaust.
Caused be a rich mixture (not all petrol was burned in the chamber) and/or the ignition timing was too late (exhaust valve opens before all the petrol is burned in the chamber).

I'm certainly not trying to start a confrontational argument here but for curiosities sake I googled it and there's a lot of info backing the lean is a hotter burn theory!
I see what your saying about excess fuel burning in the manifold but that would surely be way too rich for the engine to even run?
Of course the ignition could be advanced a bit too much.
I guess pulling a plug out and checking the colour would make one of us right

Lean does run hotter but that's not the reason the exhaust is glowing.

Think I got it back to front. I knew it was timing that may be the cause 😂

Its generally how anti-lag used to work on rally cars to build boost - open throttle, loads of fuel, retarded ignition so it starts burning outside the cylinders - loads of heat directly in the turbine - little or no power but lots of boost but it wreaks turbines in short order.

Re: Exhaust manifold glows red ?

We had a problem with our mini years ago whereby it was misfiring slightly, the car has a rally spec engine in it so idle is always a bit lumpy, but it wasn’t until we ran it up at night that we could see the problem. One of the plug leads was breaking down when hot

Bought some yellow and black plug cable, newed them all and hey presto - no misfire.

    Thanks
    Kris
