Weber 40 sticking throttle

Hi. Have twin 40 Weber's on my 1700 xflow. It's starting to idle high and when out driving the revs will start rising. I've noticed when I unplug the throttle linkage and blip the carbs the butterflies don't close up, they stick open. Shouldn't they close up by themselves? If so I presume the internal throttle return spring is buggered. Can these be changed easily, with carbs still on the car? Thanks

from memory you cant change the springs with the carbs on the car

No, looking at it from the top it does look like they'll need to come off. Do you think that's my problem with it high revving, the springs should snap the butterflies closed shouldn't they? Thanks for the reply.

Can't you just rig up another spring on the cable linkage?

I've got two springs on the throttle cable linkage which pull the linkage bar back as far as they can. It just doesn't seem enough as the revs stick high until I just put a little bit of pressure down on the top balancing screw, this then lowers the revs. I was told that with all the linkage detached when I manually open the butterflies then should then snap shut on their own, which these don't, they stay open. Which made me think I need new, stronger, internal return springs.

as you say linkage detached the throttles should snap shut on there own

Yes they should shut but the springs often break or weaken. If a spring is placed correctly to act on a lever directly on the spindles then it should shut fine. Google pics of setups as a guide.
