Stay Pre xflow or change to xflow??

My cortina mk2 1967 series 1 still has its original 1300 pre xflow fitted in standard form.the engine is in need of a light rebuild as the sump gasket is leaking but the main reason for a rebuild is it oil is getting to the spark plugs and the engine is breathing heavily.the mileage is around 80,000 so I think it could require at set of piston rings.the clutch has just started to slip slightly so the plan is the pull the engine and box out so I can tidy the engine bay at the same time as fitting a new clutch.

my question is which would be best??

option 1= rebuilding/ slightly modifying the 1300 pre xflow ie change of carb, change exhaust manifold, new cam etc
    or
option 2. = convert the car to 1600 xflow and buy a complete modified engine set up from eBay/forums etc???
    thanks paul.

Why not fit a 1500 pre xflow? or a slightly bigger one?

I did think that ,but you don’t see them for sale very often. There seams to be a better Choice of xflow engines
But I think I would like to keep a pre xflow in the car as that’s what it left the factory with.

    You can make a hybrid using a decked 1600 xflow bottom end together with a 1500 cylinder head. 82.55mm pistons = 1660cc, 83.5mm pistons with 1600 crank = 1700cc.
Not too hard to do. Some work needed to make 1600 pushrods work though but it's all do-able. Nothing too fancy (ie no cutting/welding) just maths and tolerances.

Buy a knackered 1600 xf and rebuild yourself with 1300 Pistons mild cam etc. That way you will know what you have. Too many are worn out.
