Mk1/Mk2 Escort Fuel Tank Large Thread

I know this topic has been discussed in the threads sticky and a few other posts here, and that the large inner thread for the fuel tank is 3/4" BSP however fittings for that thread don't fit my tank, so just wanted to post my thinkings on the topic.
Are people that say its 3/4" BSP forcing the fittings in, or drilling/retapping a new thread? Either way it doesn't fit my tank, instead I think it could be 1" - 12 UNF (the 12 representing TPI).

I took the tank to my local hydraulics shop where they tried all sorts of steel fittings including 3/4" BSP, but couldn't find anything that would fit. So I 3D printed a range of plugs with different threads to try and find something that would fit based off the dimensions measured.
My original fitting measures approx 25.30 mm externally (major diameter) and roughly a 2mm thread pitch (measured with calipers as I don't own a thread gauge).

1" - 12 UNF and M25 x 2mm were the only threads that tightened well with no binding that I could feel, all the others were either too large in diameter, wrong pitch, or slightly too loose.

I'm looking at this as I'm working on adding an EFI feed to my Mk2. My Mk1 already has EFI and the feed is simply the original fitting drilled out with a large copper pipe brazed in, for the Mk2 I'd like to use AN fittings from the tank ideally.
Both 1" UNF and M25 appear to be really uncommon threads, I'm struggling to find bolts with those threads online let alone AN adapters, so I'm currently set on welding a AN bung onto the tank but thought I'd post my workings anyway.

I also took some pics inside the tank to see how thick the metal was surrounding the original thread, not sure if there's enough meat there to tap out really, using photoshop I measured the lip to be around 1.9mm thick.
Also doesn't help that it looks like its tapped slightly off centre.

Re: Mk1/Mk2 Escort Fuel Tank Large Thread

I had the same problem, I wanted to remove all the fittings from the bottom of the tank and just use new AN fittings and I couldn't find an adaptor that I was happy with.

What I did was use the original main tank fitting with a new washer and removed the existing solid pipe adaptor (forgot the correct name, Anot's fitting?). This thread in mine is 1/2 BSP. I've read on this site, and others, that other people have used different thread sizes, however none of those fitted mine. Did Fords use different ones?

AN-6 and AN-8 to 1/2 BSP adaptors are readily available, I got mine from Torques on ebay. Does it leak, don't know until Saturday as that's when she gets filled with petrol for the first time.

To be honest I completely overlooked the thread in the nut as it looked quite small, but it sounds like your original fitting is different to mine. Do you happen to have any photos of what it looks like before and after the AN adapter.

My tank fitting looks the same as in your photo.

I did have a look on my phone to see if I had a photo of mine from when I installed it about four months ago so I could add one to my post. Photos of all the rest of the pipework but not that part. I can't get one until Saturday when I'm at the garage where I'm restoring the car, new loom being trial fitted and we are testing the fuel pump / system for leaks and setting the pressure regulator.

What I used was the 1/2" BSP to AN-6 adaptor then a 90 degree AN-6 Forged hose fitting. I'm running carbs by the way.

The Ford parts book says it's a 1" fitting.

Does your book also happen to say the thread type, UNF?

Good to hear others come to the same conclusion, its unfortunate neither are popular sizes for fittings.

Re: Mk1/Mk2 Escort Fuel Tank Large Thread

I'm working on the car Saturday so I'll get a photo then.

I definitely used a 1/2 BSP to AN-6 adaptor to which I connected a 90 degree AN-6 forged hose fitting, I checked my receipt before I posted. I bought all the fittings and hose for the fuel system in one go from Torques.

Before I started this adventure I read all the info I could find on what other people had used for both the large tank fitting and the small pipe fitting (which I used). It cost me two incorrect sized adaptors (which I had bought separately to prove it could be done before I bought the rest of it). I then did what I should have done in the first place and measured it myself as it appears that Ford may have used different fittings as others were equally adamant as me on what thread they used. All I can say is mine fits, it was a tight fit, however I also used liquid PTFE on the thread just to be sure. Saturday, when she gets fuelled up for the first time, will prove me right or wrong.

No it doesn't say what thread. But if 1" - 12 UNF fits it will be that.
M25 - 2mm is slightly different pitch but it will fit because the M25 is a bit smaller than 1".

I've just reread this and I think you do misunderstand what I'm getting at. Are you aware that the fitting in your photo comes apart in two pieces. There is the part on the left that screws into the tank with the 1" thread, has just a round collar. The part on the right, with the nut, screws into that collar. It's the internal thread in the collar part that is 1/2" BSP.

I made the same mistake when I took mine apart as the obvious thing to do is use a spanner on the nut, not realising that if you do that they will come out of the tank together as one piece. I had to hold the collar with mole grips and unscrew the part on the right with a spanner.

Hopefully my photo tomorrow will clearly show the 1"" thread collar part in the tank with the AN-6 adaptor screwed into it. The part with the nut you don't use.

Bingo, the lights flicked on now! Yes I misunderstood previously, I get what you mean now! I'll take a crack at separating mine tomorrow.
When you say 'collar' to clarify you mean the flange bit that pushes up against foam washer? And that the collar is attached to the 1" thread bit yeah?

Thanks for clearing this up, hopefully I'll be taking the same route as you now, here's hoping tomorrow goes okay for you!

I gave up trying to find the right thread and welded on a AN6 male fitting to the bolt, much easier.

Did you manage to take a pic today of your setup?
We got a couple of the tank fittings out today but couldn't separate the larger thread from either of them without risk of damaging them, even with a fair amount of heat they just wouldn't budge, will try again tomorrow.

I soldered a 8mm copper tube in mine. From the you could use an an- hard line adapter. 👍

Re: Mk1/Mk2 Escort Fuel Tank Large Thread

I must apologise because when I crawled underneath to take the photo it all came back and I realised I've mislead you. Age, memory and drink have taken its toll. Also I'm not that good at checking my receipts so it appears, I had them in the wrong order.

    The correct version is :

The first fitting I bought was the AN-6 to 1/2 BSP, didn't fit. Then I bought AN-6 to 3/8 BSP to fit in the nut, didn't fit. At this point I measured the thread in the NUT, for this I bought a AN-6 to 1/2-20 UNF which did fit in the Nut. All were bought from Torques ebay store.

Please don't take my word on any of this, I hate to think you bought an adaptor on my say so and then found out it was wrong. Measure it for yourself. On the plus side the way I've done it appears to have worked with no leaks on Saturday. As for fuel pressure didn't get that far as we are not going to test it until we are ready to start the engine.

I did this years ago, all I can remember is the large thread isnt a standard one so I left the large thread alone and drilled and tapped the small female thread for the closest unf thread to an AN adapter, but I cant remember the dimensions...but I am old.

Did we actually get a definitive size for the large thread the one that actually goes in the tank ? Sorry if i missed it.

thinking of redoing my setup but would like to start from scratch on new stuff so i don't ruin the current install.

I still believe it to be 1" - 12 UNF but good luck finding any fittings for that thread. For my setup I have settled on welding a AN-10 bung in the original outlet, not as ideal as keeping the original thread but not been able to find anything that will fit it yet.

Could it be that it is a 1 1/16” fitting? That seems to be a more common size.

Re: Mk1/Mk2 Escort Fuel Tank Large Thread

Thought I'd post an update as I've moved past this point in my project, I firmly believe the large thread is 1" - 12 UNF.
I ended up modifying an original fitting by cutting the nut off and welding on an AN-10 bung, also adding a angled piece of tube on the inside for the fuel filter. Advantage of doing it this way is the fuel filter can be retained as the fitting is still removable, plus I don't have to worry about right/wrong threads as it's the original fitting.

Afternoon all! I found this thread whilst searching for the exact same thing - a fitting that will go into the 1" hole in the bottom of the tank and allow a 10AN fitting to connect to it. For love nor money I can find nothing off the shelf anywhere. The thread in the tank is 1"-12.

So i got in touch with a company that will make an adapter up - Male 1"-12 -> Male 10AN, with a flat sealing face on the tank side and a hex in between to tighten it in. However... the cost is £59, which to be fair for a bespoke item that they will custom make one off, isn't too bad I guess.

The good news is that the price comes down to £25 if I get 10 made....

So I was wondering if you guys knew of anyone after something similar, or if you think there is much interest for such an item if I were to order the 10? I could provide the drawings for the adapter to make sure everyone's happy before ordering?

    Kind Regards

    Joe

sounds good, I have been in the same issue. This would probably improve my setup so i would be interested. an-10 is quite large but you can get reducers etc or maybe get it made with -8 or -6 from the start.

    Hi,

Thanks for the reply, i'm the same. The welded fitting is fine, and to be honest I think trying to find this adaptor has turned into more an obsession than anything else - I don't think I'll rest till get one! Ill await some more feedback, and if I can cover the cost of the fittings, I'll get the drawings made up and sent out. That way collectively everyone can review them and make sure there are no fundamental errors

Regards AN10, I am using AN10 as the supply to the pump, but yes once there is an AN/JIC fitting on there, you have a vast array of options available.

I would be interested in this if there is enough for a group buy.

Re: Mk1/Mk2 Escort Fuel Tank Large Thread

Its crazy - the more I look, the more threads (no pun intended) i find about the same subject, and no one seems to have solved it. So I feel like I owe it to everyone else to see this through now! I have just finished a presentation that I will be sending off the the company I'm speaking with. They will hopefully provide some drawings which I will then share for review. And if they look the job, then Ill proceed to get 10 made. The turnaround for making them is 4-5days, but the time taken to sort the drawings will need to be taken into account.

So far I see on here 2 people that may be interested, plus I will probably keep 2. So ideally id like to find 2 more people interested if possible.

Would there be any option of having a strainer on the inside of the tank (like the original fitting)?

Re: Mk1/Mk2 Escort Fuel Tank Large Thread

Yeah this was a consideration. I had thought of having the tank side with a slashed pipe into the tank so the original filter could be refitted. However it changed the price quite considerably, and i figured that its straight forward enough to be added on if people wish. I imagine in a lot of cases people wont have anything there to start with!

That said i have specified the tank threaded part to be 2.5mm longer so it will got further onto the tank. That way it will sit above the lowest level and avoid any muck going down it.

The specs are submitted now, and ill get the drawings back mid next week. Ill put them here so please cast your eye over it and see what you think!

Re: Mk1/Mk2 Escort Fuel Tank Large Thread

    Hello again all,

As promised please find attached the drawings I've received back for the adapter im planning to have made. Please have a look and see what you think - there is one bit im not completely happy with and thats the size of the seat for the sealing washer. It needs to be a bit wider really, the sealing washer sealing area is quite large and will overhang the adapter in this version. Please let me know what you think, and I can get any changes made up.

Any chance you could post a slightly higher res version, having a hard time reading the text when zooming in, becomes very pixelated.

    Hi

Sorry I'm having to resize the original image right down to allow it to attach, do you know of an alternate way I could attach it?

    Kind Regards
