Type of externally mounted water pump on the 8v and 16v Holbay Pinto ?

    Dear Friends,
As the title suggests, I am trying to find some information regarding the type of the water pump on the rather rare 8v and 16v Holbay Pinto engines. Apparently ( from the google photos and also some posts in TS ) both engines used a kind of externally mounted water pumps probably from the Ford’s part bin in those days. I think the 8v Holbay Pinto was a boat engine and might be based on the 2.0 USA Pinto and we haven’t seen those engines in Europe whereas the 16v Holbay Pinto was homologated in the Gr.2 Escort.
    Thank you.

IIRC the holbay pump on 8v pinto used the core plugs to distribute the water more evenly around nr3 and 4 piston to prevent hotspots. As to finding one

As far as I know, only the Race spec injected 16v and some odd 8v Holbay engines used that water feeding method which I am trying to find out the type of the water pump. However, the Gr.2 Escort 16v Holbay engines might have used the normal Pinto water pump in the block location without the external water tubes to the side of the block.

Cant help you with the type of pump though.

My holbay 8v head still has the machine sections in the top of the head for the water porting.

Thank you very much for the links. I remember the TS thread and as a matter of fact I have posted on that thread as well.
I can’t figure it out the water pump type from the pictures though.

In 1990 I bought a second hand Holbay single scavenge dry sump pump and pan and in the box was a remote mounted water pump and blanking plate like the one in the photos. I remember it driven by a narrow toothed belt.

I don't know whatever happened to the pump, it either got thrown out or lost as we had no use for it, it was all such a long time ago.

What a pity !! At that time, did it look like a V4 or V6 engine pump somehow ? It must be from Ford’s part bin.

It was all such a long time ago. I have looked at images of the V6 water pump and I don't think that's same one as Holbay used. Maybe they used one from a different maufacturers engine.

Re: Type of externally mounted water pump on the 8v and 16v Holbay Pinto ?

I have a Holbay 16V head and it utilizes a water pump mounted to a blanking bracket where the regular water pump would mount. I was told the pump is from a V4 Transit engine but I don't know if that is correct or not. As pointed out there is a mainfold/pipe which scavenges from the core plug locations on the side of the block. Here is some photos of the pump and the manifold/pipe. Unfortunately I don't have access to the parts at the moment as they packed away back home in Australia so this is the only info. I can provide at the moment. The two photos I have provided here show the pump and the manifold, and the other photo of the engine shows the blanking plate the water pump is mounted to. I'll try to find some more recent photos (I didn't take those photos, they were taken by the bloke I bought it off)

    Cheers

    Hi Justin,
Sorry for the late response. Thank you very much for the photos. The system is very clear but difficult to figure out the water pump type.
Just one correction I would like to make, the pump is not actually scavenging water from the plugs, it is pumping water towards the water plugs in this system.
Where are you running your Holbay 16v engine ?
