Xflow breather system, lot's of oil

    Hello guys.

My Xflow max power is at 5900rpm.
When I go to 5900-6200 rpm, I get a lot of oil in the catchtank. Don't know where it comes from, from the breather at the rocker cover or crankcase pressure...

I have steel crank and rods and I would like to change my speed range a little higher. I now have 34 chokes and thinking about changin them to 36.
But when I go to a higher speed range I'm afraid I get more oil in the catchtank..

Anyone can tell me the reason and/or solution of the high quantity of oil?

    Thanks !

Even with that deflector on blanking plate, I also have a lot of oil in catch tank, but only when bed in new pistons.
After that period, 500 to 1000 km, think got better.
then afterward I used one things seen on this forum, one pipe to breathe from block to rocker cover, at the back. Then front rocker cover to catch tank. Things were improved a lot.

Do you have a pic of it please? With your system you will have a lot of oil in the rockercover... doesn't it do any harm?

Re: Xflow breather system, lot's of oil

    Some engine builder recommend this.
Oil in top of engine will go down anyway. I run the engine a while with no issue.
Also some used, from the breather a pipe to return oil in sump.
A lot of posts are talking about this subject.

    This one is interresting
Head: Rocker cover is tin original xflow. The oil cap is the one used on Pinto's, vented with vapours exit on its side. From the cap, a suitable hose (I think to remember the diameter is similar to heater hoses) goes on the other side of the engine bay to an open catch tank. So lenght could be something like 60/70cm

Block: kept the original xflow vapour separator box but without the valve. From the box there is another similar hose (the one I'm been able to introduce in place of the ball valve assembly) going as straight vertically I can (30cm?) in engine room and then to the same catch tank. The lenght here is also nearly 1 meter. Probably (I don't remember) I pushed a sort of wire meshed steel like this at around 15cm from the vapour box, inside the hose.

it is not really there as a flame trap but rather as a "stop" for excessive oil, leaving only air and vapours to pass.

The original fuel pump is not there any longer. There is a blank plate made in alu, without any kind of deflector

Oil pan is completely std, no baffles

When I look at the catch tank, there is only water and some bubble of oil, nothing really.

    Just for info.
I don't know how much a xflow can tollerate excessive ign advance before real knockin can be heard. But if there is too much advance not needed, it can increase crankcase pressure.
    Hope this helps

As well as the deflector on the fuel pump blanking plate, most "competition" type camshafts for high rpm use have the fuel pump lobe removed, as it is well known to act as an excellent device to pump oil straight up the breather outlet!

What camshaft are you using? Does it still have the fuel pump cam lobe?

@ Mkdu; I now have the same system as you have. Both hoses go to the catch tank, and approx with the same lenghts as yours. But I can easy fill a bottle of 200Ml in 15min when I go High revving.
Advance is at 6 degrees I thought.
@MemphisTwin : Cam is a KentCams 244... Don't know if it has the cam lobe, I think so.. It's been A while I have build the engine

This is what I ended up doing in my Anglia, old picture, I've since run the block breather up to the middle of the rocker cover between the webers, my compression was also around 120 anyways so I've since done a rebuild. I haven't fired the motor so I can't comment yet on it's effectiveness but when I would drive before, even 20km I probably had about 200-300ml of oil in my catch can. The blowby was terrible.

As a breather hose - that is pretty small bore ..... maybe 3/8"? Rule with breathers 'Bigger is better'. I use two 3/4" bore pipes on my Zetec and have 3x 3/4" on a turbo'd bike!

@ Llanglia, So you also didn't put an exhaust on the catch can to return the oil to the block?

No I didn't, It's got a screw off bottom I just manually empty it back in if it was clean. Gonna fire up new motor tomorrow shouldn't hopefully have the blowby and oil issues the old one had.
