    Lotus twincam oil pressure

    Hi ,

I am starting up my new build lotus twincam engine .
i started testing the oil pressure without spark plugs .
i need to turn the engine around for 40 sec before the light goes out .
if i try again 1 min later its the same again ... nearly 40 sec ....
the engine has a high pressure oil pump with sandwich plate and oil cooler .

is this normal it takes so long to build up pressure ?

That's not normal. Instead of the oilpressure-sensor-switch fit an oilpressure gauge and see what that gives.

Agreed - even a 'dry' / rebuilt engine, plugs out should put the light out in less than 5 - 10 seconds ...... they are usually only rated at 5psi. Gauge will help but something is wrong!

Did you check crank to bearing clearances?

it wouldnt surprise me too much if the first prime took 40 seconds, but that should be a one off. subsequently cranking and the oil light should be near instantly out. i have had this before on an x/flow with a cracked oil pump body.

    Hi ,

All bearing have veen measured and replaced .
The oil pump is a new high pressure from burton .
I wil use a gauge today to see how much the pressure really is .
How much bar should i have ?

    Hi ,

After trying a bit ... when the engine starts up oil pressur builds up quick
    I have now 65 psi .
Maybe the starter motor is not running the engine over fast enough .

pressure relief valves on the pump have been known to stick open sometimes and then mysteriously fix themselves

    Lotus twincam oil pressure

Mine would if left a while lose all pressure and you would have to re prime the pump by removing and filling with oil. It seems ok now and the start yesterday was after 6 months.
