Mk1 Escort - Bubble Arch Steering Wander

    Hi everyone,

I have a bit of an issue with steering wander. Whenever I drive over a rough bit of road or rut, I seem to be fighting with the steering wheel to get out of the rut / correct it.

I have fitted 8J wheels -12 offset, bilstein coilovers (not overly low) and a twincam anti Roll bar. This means I'm running quite a lot of caster and camber.

I am also running roller bearing strut tops.

The track rod end and tca look reletively parallel and of a similar length - no pretty confident this would not cause bump steer.

Could I correct this issue by fitting adjustable top mounts/ will it make much of a difference?

    Many thanks

    Jamie

Too much caster and amber will do that, aim for 1.5deg negative camber, 3deg caster and 0 toe. although -12 offset wheels are never going to give the best steering feel.....the issue could be the wheels

Do make sure you have the correct mounts for the twincam arb

Hi, yeah I have the correct mounts. I would upload a photo , but I don't think I can do it from my phone.

'Tramlining' is pretty normal with wide wheels and negative offset.

I have a similar set up and set mine to standard Mexico specs, 3 deg negative camber, not sure on castor as I don’t have a gauge for that, and 3mm toe in.
If you have a quick rack, this will make it feel worse, hope this helps.

    Jamie,

the ET-12 wheels will give a big scrub radius hence the wandering of the steering.
Remedy is using struts with a higher KPI (kingpin inclination) but these are rare.
Other fix is a toe in of say 3 mm, you don't list what you have now.

I make these hubs that have KPI designed into them...

Ah cheers, I'll look I to the hubs. The camber was 1.5 degrees, caster is 6 degrees, toe in is 0.4 degrees.

So I've been looking into your hubs. Will I need to correct the camber and extend the steering arms?

If you buy any aftermarket Nissan Sylvia (S13 S14 S15) struts, they come with camber adjustable plates, i've never seen any aftermarket struts without the camber plates.

The steering arms on the struts can be made standard length, but i think you will find that 20mm shorter is nice. It's not only good for drifting, but great for parking and 3 point turns. Even with a quick rack it's still feels positive and predictable.

Quick one M11rf, are you saying the sylvia has the same strut top mounting points? As in the fitting dimensions?

No... You'll either need to drill new holes in the body to take the Sylvia strut top or modify the Sylvia strut top to match the holes on the Escort body.

Re: Mk1 Escort - Bubble Arch Steering Wander

For further info, motorsport tools can machine the escort stub axles up to 12 degrees. I think the standard 2.8 struts are 7 degrees?

Does anyone also know how far you can move the camber on the adjustable top plates from standard in 16mm?

It would help in my calculations.

    Cheers
