    I really couldn't resist

My Wife went camping with some elderly friends and while away got talking about me and my old cars, the woman then asked if she thought i would know anyone who might buy their old car that's been in the garage since she retired in 2006, although they did have it Mot'd and serviced every year.

Turns out it was a Mk2 escort 1600 ghia Auto, family owned since it was a couple of months old with 52,000 original miles showing.

Well i didn't need telling twice i arrange to go and have a look this week and today we agreed a price and i picked the car up.

Never been welded and from what i can see no panels replaced, it has a couple of minor scraps but nothing major :

Cheers, not many left like this, no panels replaced and only 3 or 4 marks on the original paint.

I've not cleaned it yet it's exactly as it's come out the garage including the cobwebs.

Tax it in the morning and i need to try to fit some rear seatbelts for the kids.

    Re: I really couldn't resist

We've known these people for over a year and they'd never mentioned it to us before, my wife has been to their house many times but it was always tucked away in the garage, i guess that's what happens they put them away and forget about them.

Yes mate mainly the rears, although one of the fronts have been replaced.
I got one new rear one today but can't get another til next week, i looked at the law side of things and even the kids don't have to wear them if they were not fitted new, but i'd rather they did.

    Re: I really couldn't resist

Hi, Just admiring your MK2 Auto escort, funny thing is I have just come across a similar find and am not sure what to do, Originally I was told of an old car that had not run for 30 years and has been in the garage since the owner died, and if it was any use to me "take it away" so the daughter could have the garage space. I had no idea what the car was untill we opened the garage, After removing cardboard boxes of junk a Blue P reg 4 door Escort 1300 GL appeared, rather dusty as expected but in bloody good nick for the year, a few rust bubbles on a couple of the door bottoms and a damaged front wing, but also in the garage was a new front wing and a complete new front pannel. Under the bonnet is like new and the car interior is as no one has sat in it, looking at the milage on the speedo it read just over 13,000 miles! (genuine) I said i would take it away and give her £200 scrap value.
Since then she has told her son and now he wants at least £1,000 and may put it on ebay! what is A 1970's 4 door 1.3 GL Auto Escort with 13,000 miles on it worth restored?

I've made a map of the local area and have spent the last few days stopping to say "Hello" to all the old biddies up and down the street.

I've narrowed it down by only speaking to old peple who have garages
