    Re: MK1 Escort ST170

just been having a read, as i have followed a similar route, although i have had to retain the standard air/fuel induction. at the moment, i am running the vvt with the shift light, but am in the process of getting it done corectly. have to say with the vvt off the engine is totally flat, but with it wired in, coming in at around 2.7k, it comes alive! approx 95bhp@3k, 169bhp@5k upto 6.7k ish. without it, i drop right down to 125ish bhp. took a while to realise why things werent working, but soon realised it was the way is wired it! i assumed the shift light was giving me a positive switch, turned out to be a neg switch! have put the vernier on ex cam, hoping to get 190 ish with it working right. funny how some have success and others dont. if i could put a set of t/b's on it, well, id be well away!

i call it built for use and abuse

    Re: MK1 Escort ST170

Had the MK1 on the rollers today at CPL Racing Fast Ford were there and will be doing a feature soon.

The results from the power runs were not quite as expected 167bhp with 171lb of torque, the low bhp figure was a surprise as the torque figure was high for the st engine I can only think there is a cam timing problem, possibly to much advance.
Next step is a visit to the rolling road to have the map sorted, still running at a safe 27 degrees ignition advance so there is more power to come fingers crossed.

    Re: MK1 Escort ST170

Just had my ST170 head flowed by Andrew at A L Developments should be all built back up at the weekend, hopefully should give the power increase I am after, fingers crossed.

    Spec so far,

    VVT delete catcams and verniers

    Flowed Head

    45 Jenveys with flowed inlet

    Omex 600

    Custom 4 2 1 Exhaust by Zero

This is far as I will take the ST engine if the power is not there engine number 3 next year?

The pictures don't do justice to Andrews work on the ports

    Looking very good.

I hope it doesn't come to that and you can get the power that you wanted, but what engine will you go for if it doesn't?

Still working on and off on the escort, built a new Tran-x diff using 45/90 ramp angles as recommended by Tran-x for track use, just had the head sorted just some new brakes to sort out.

Possibly a Duratec makes good power with good reliability

As this is the last of the engine mods it will now be mapped properly hopefully over 200bhp now.
Not a ford Fair this year can't get the time off.

    Re: MK1 Escort ST170

It's all back up and running, 20 minutes of panic as it would only run on cylinders 2 and 3 a faulty coil pack was to blame, strange that the coil pack failed as it was working fine with no miss-firing before the head was removed

Next step brakes and a properly mapped not sure who to use yet.

No problem, need to check the alternator is definitely the right one as there are some slight variations i am 99% sure it is the one I use. The mounts are from http://www.raceline.co.uk/products/p...8&CategoryID=2 the bottom mount is rubber mounted so the alternator doesn't get shaken to bits, the top adjuster is not that tough as it broke in two last time out at Lydden.

Not yet still running my map one of the reasons is the exhaust may be changed so no point until I decide what to do, the same spec engine using the same catcams made 207bhp and 174 torque

Video at Lydden with my mates mk2 not a bad pace for a old zetec http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=995XQfwuEo4

Catcams are very close to Fords tolerance, I did not have to change any of the buckets when I installed mine as they were all just within spec.

I removed the vvt and installed catcams and verniers just could not make the vvt work, had a choice to either upgrade the omex 600 or go with new cams expensive option but they bring this engine to life.
