Thread: MK1 Escort ST170

  1. #1

    MK1 Escort ST170

Decided to change the black top for a st170 engine as this seems to be the best tuning option in the long run, start off using the std cams and vvt hopefully a change of cams to make 200bhp later on.

Going to transfer the Retro ford sump and engine mounts which only use 3 bolts on the st170 engine, the Raceline water rail and water pump pulley will all swap over along with the engine management.

I'll be watching this bud just what I gona be doing with my car once the garage is done.
I'll be fitting a standard motor and building a hi spec motor as and when the money allowes.

Been thinking of getting a CNC head they say there good for 300bhp!!!

Ps nice workshop you got there

A CNC head is on the wish list, if I can get 180 to 190bhp to start with that should keep me happy for a while

are both those engines new? very very shiny for something that uses oil, water and petrol!!! nice workshop too.

    Re: MK1 Escort ST170

    Bit more done,

Finally finished the engine after sorting out the inlet manifold, used vht crackle paint on the cam cover to finish the engine off.

Stripped the engine bay to sort out the damage to the bulkhead and to weld in a chassis tube kit to get rid of the heli coils in the chassis rails.

Yum yum. Lovely looking bay. The 180 figure is nice. Any ideas what it costs to get the 300 odd figure? Keep up the good work and loads more photos please.

Heads and cams from http://www.cncheads.co.uk/ford_st170.html are £1450+vat plus cam verners and uprated bottom end, you need deep pockets to get to 300bhp.

220 to 240bhp with the above head is a more relistic figure, lets face it 240bhp in a escort is more than enough to scare the shit out of yourself

    Re: MK1 Escort ST170

Ive been doing some more research I recon 5K would get you the 300bhp mark but you would probaly get 250 for not much more thaan half that...

    Re: MK1 Escort ST170

Next job is to sort out the chassis tube kit bought from Rally Design, removed the old captive nuts useing a old unf bolt a few taps of the hammer they came away surprisingy easily.

Marked and drilled out just need to shorten the tubes and weld flush and finish off with some top plates.

Hopefully finish this asap and start on the engine bay

Nice job there bud I got to do this as well but im going the chassis mount the engine this time...

  16. #15

    Re: MK1 Escort ST170

Got some more work done on the escort, finished the chassis tubes this will make getting the gearbox out so much easier next time should make a change not to beat up the bulkhead.

Started to prep the engine bay for painting the only area which needs some tidying is the lip under the heater bubble apart from that this is one solid shell, not bad for 38 years old.

    Re: MK1 Escort ST170

Yep the bare metal on the bulkhead and chassis rails have been etched primed and are now in primer filler, need to flatten back ready for the top coat. Used my mates primer gun with a 1.8 cap did catch me out with the amount of paint it applies.

I forgot the camera today I'll get post some pics tomorrow.

    Re: MK1 Escort ST170

Finished rubbing down today and painted and it's all blue again one paint run to sort out on the bulkhead and it's done

Changed to the ST170 as this is the better zetec engine, stronger bottom end just a change of cams could see nearly 195bhp, with a cnc head 245 is possible.
The only downside is not being able to use my bda style cam cover to hide a modern engine

Some more progress fitted the TTV Racing flywheel quality piece of engineering shame it's hidden

With help from my son the engine is now in place managed this time not to beat up the engine bay.

Not much to do now before it's up and running

    Re: MK1 Escort ST170

Finished the engine over the weekend the engine was run up to temp for the 1st time, the top end sounded like a bag of spanners until the oil filled the vvt, engine seems to be ok

Changed the the black top injectors for a higher flow rate the new injectors will cope up to a possible 245bhp.

Still using the black top map until I get the escort on the rollers but that's still a way off.

Looking great Eric - have you considered the vernier for the exhaust cam? According to Retro Dave, tweaking it can release up to 10bhp...

Not to keen on the vernier just on the exhaust as 10bhp is not enough, I will be hopefully using the vvt delete cams in the new year to get 200bhp+ Catcams are the way to go but are very pricey need to find out if Kent Cams or Piper do any for st.

On Catcams web site this the result for there st delete cams

Cat Cams adjustable pulleys required due to VVT deletion
Designed to work with carburettors or independent throttle bodies
Dyno proven to produce 207 bhp / 177 lb.ft of torque

    Re: MK1 Escort ST170

Piper do reginds and you can get the inlet cam machined to fit a vernier instead of the vvt that should give you over 200... and if you get the head gas flowed you could see 240

The cat cams are silly money try talking to some other companys and having cams made Dunnel do there owen cams with race winning resolts...

Im looking at getting a CNC head (not shore where from yet maybe US) as I want 250+++
