    2ltr Pinto

    Hi I just bought a Mk1 escort with a 2ltr Pinto.
The engine is currently out of the car. Is there any way of telling that it is definitely a 2 ltr and not been rebored to 2.1?

It has had some work done to it as the the original head has been replaced along with camshaft. The camshaft has markings on it ‘PINTO A8 17D13’. It is also running twin 40 Weber’s. I’ve been reading a bit online that the a8 cam was used by some engine builders in Finland as a race/rally cam. I’m guessing this would be too much to use as fast road? The engine and car were both imported from Finland a few years ago. Any advice tips on any internals to use for fast toad, Kent or piper cam? Twin 45’s?

If it's got an A8 cam that Graham has said to be a Race cam and you're building it for fast road why would you think it needs bigger carbs if it's got 40's on it already.

Ok so is it worth leaving the 40’s on it then?

Well if you're only building it for fast road and it's already got 40's and a Race cam I dont think it'll need bigger carbs again. So yea I think the 40's would be plenty big enough already.

Also the clutch plate has markings of SCHWUNGRADSEITE 57691 so I’m guessing this has been changed from the standard ford

race ram and 40's = YUK, carbs are too small to make proper power, cam wil only want to make power beyond breathing capabilities of the carbs, for road use theres only one thing to do and thats change the cam, BUT if it was built to suit a race cam the engines compression ratio will be too high for a mild cam

So if I change cam to fast road would carbs need changing?

40's will work on a fast road cam, but even then 45's make more power, BUT if the engine really has been built with a race cam then the compression will be too high for a fast road cam, basically you really need to pull it apart and work out what you have before you start changing stuff

Many thanks Graham. That was the sort of route I leaning towards. Got an engine stand yesterday so can it bolted on there at weekend and start taking apart. So watch this space for next set of questions!!

yes its an ok box, nothing special, probably a better choice than a T9 unless you want a close set of ratios

Was thinking similar, maybe a bit stronger than a Type 9 but not as good ratios.

Thanks. Is it possible to change the ratios in box? Just wondering that’s all

    2ltr Pinto

Not easily but I doubt it's worse than type 9 in real world.
The word on the clutch may be German for flywheel side 😄
Not uncommon the have sach etc as std parts.
