    Crossflow turbo

After a bit of advice for experience.

Thinking of going the way of turbo for a 1600 rather than just building a hot engine. I was looking along the lines of blow through carb using a GT 2 barrel and manifold, intercooler and ecu for ignition. Don't know if late model head or early head with combustion chamber and flat top pistons is best. Has anyone built one and what power should i expect without going crazy on boost and RPM.

    Re: Crossflow turbo

if you blow through the carb you will have to keep boost very low. x/f isnt a great engine to turbo, the piston design really doesnt suit, either from a strength or heat absorption front. i would of said flat top pistons and a chambered head would be the way to go. low boost is only going to give you around 150 bhp, 150 bhp is a walk in the park for a mildly tuned n/s pinto.................

    Re: Crossflow turbo

    Ok
I thought it may have been closer to 190hp. It would be achievable to get 150hp out of a crossflow N/A by spending less than turbo charging.
Is draw through a better way to go of efi the only real answer to achieve higher figures.
I have always played with pinto's but wanted to be different for a escort van i am customizing. probably should go zetec instead.

Has anyone had experience with a crossflow turbo build?

    Re: Crossflow turbo

you could probably get 300bhp, but how much boost/cost would it take? for sure anything over 150 will need forged pistons, special head gasket etc etc

    Re: Crossflow turbo

I was hoping for around 180-200hp. I did look at what had been done on youtube and there seem to be a few 1300's running turbo's. some of these were making up to 190hp.
I thought 1700 on safe tune would do that with less effort.

    Re: Crossflow turbo

I have about 18 months to build an engine for my mk2 van. Currently doing panel work and some tasteful customization to make it different but not over the top.
Thats why i wanted to go with a turbo kent rather than a pinto as a large % of escorts are pinto here in Australia.

    Re: Crossflow turbo

didn't mean it like that. where do you want to start. built a 1300 for hillclimbing in 2016. 260hp and 221lb/ft . used t25 turbo,1.8 bar boost, dta 80 ecu, custom exhaust,plenum,550cc injectors,vw/audi throttle body, intercooler. proper flat race head, steel rods, standard crank, forged twincam pistons, oil squirter jets. Problems, apart from a dropped valve which goosed the turbo it then cracked the bore as it was a crappy off centre casting. had the block linered but instead of fitting ductile liners as asked for only fitted cast iron ones so cracked a liner again. for some reason it wont rev past 9k but beggars cant be choosers eh. For you i would reccomend using a long rod with a nice light piston (lighter than the accralites im using),forget about blow through carb run an ecu,you can use quite high C/R for a turbo application, have a head with a smaller inlet than usual but a bigger exhaust as getting rid of the gases is one of the suspected reasons for not revving higher. As with any turbo build getting rid of the heat is a concern so efficient rad and as big an intercooler as you can fit,oil cooler as well for road use. finally set yourself a budget and then triple it at least. 200 hp with a 1600 will be easy using 1 bar. To sum up light, thick crowned pistons (bit of a contradiction i know),modern ecu, longer steel rods, single throttle body on plenum , cometic mls head gasket perfectly fine

    Re: Crossflow turbo

Wow, if your pockets are deep enough you can extract a lot of power. It seem there has been more development with 1300's but i guess thats the class of competition entered.
I need to do a bit of research on what parts i can find and plan from there.
