Standard pinto ingintion map for MS1 or just the timing figures.

    Hi all,

In the midst of tuning my pinto running on MS1 extra. I am trying to compile an ignition map to get it it closer than just an educated guess. Can anyone supply a screen shot or the general figures i should be aiming for i.e. Max advance at what point etc

this is the rough and ready version i have so far. I think the 38 degs max advance might be a bit high.

Thanks in advance for any guidance

Looks like you map is written upside down. Where you can add more advance, you got less.

What's the figure down the left-hand side, engine temp?

I have seen some maps with more advance in the bottom right hand side from zetecs etc. I can try an extrapolate from there if that is a better set of figures.

The left hand axis is the manifold pressure, I am currently running on that as i am trying to understand alphan or TPS that as it seems even more complicated.

Megasquirt is great but people can make it seem very complicated at times when you read things.

    Cheers

If you fill in these numbers from the bottom and stop somewhere between 97 and 122 Kpa you should be OK as a starting point

That's just what i needed to get me on the right path. that what i was thinking. I have been ok so far as it is mainly been running on tickover and a few revs etc. I have been battling with allsorts of things but i am getting there now.

With moving to tuner studio from megatune and also had issue with coolant settings on the app and the sensor it has tested me a bit. On a plus note i managed to get the autotune to work today and that seems very good. So with getting the ignition closer etc should be good to get an MOT.

    Thanks

Your second image is a lot better, although its for forced induction so cap yours at 100kpa.
The max figures are going to be totally fuel dependant.

Thanks, That was my plan i am going to draft out one in excel shortly taking into account the differences. I will post up later. Just getting it running so far has been interesting anything in the ball park so far will be good.

Been 20 years in the planning to get FI on a car ever since weber brought out the Alpha. As you can tell I am MS1 it's took me that long to get it off the ground !!

But really happy with it so far.

Ok guys so i have come up with this. This is based on purely looking at others on the internet etc with little understanding etc. Now i am thinking about this no one seems to offer a simple explanation. There is lots of info either all very complicated or all about small block chevy's with distributors and 3000bhp

so my engine runs around 45-50 map kpa at tickover 1000 ish rpm. My thinking is then at 100 map kpa and 6400 rpm this will be full throttle flat out etc would that need max advance ? whilst at 40 map kpa 6400 rpm i assume this a full throttle shut off ?. My table and many others i have looked at seem to have a similar layout as mentioned further up.

Is my thinking correct. I appreciate that the timing really needs to be tested on the dyno etc to get optimum. It would be nice to understand the figures i am throwing around to get a reasonable ignition before heading to the rollers.

    Thanks

If your tick over is 1000rpm I would expect to see the advance in the 1000rpm column a little lower, probably 10*. I'd also make the advance in the 700 column to have more advance, so if idle was 10* then 700 column about 15*, just helps with idle and when you let off the throttle stop from cutting out.

Overall rest of it looks ok. Could probably run more advance in the cruising and overrun areas if you wanted. Also your max load advance is quite low for a pinto and comes in quite late.

That makes sense as i have seen graphs for all in at 3600 rpm and mention of around 36 degs etc. The more i get to understand the more questions i get in my head.

all in @ 36 maybe on good old fashioned 4 star, but modern unleaded fuels want less advance

That's the figure I've always had in my mind, but only because I read it, not because I understand it

So unleaded needing less advance is it that to do with the fact that it burns at a different rate and speed then?

It is down to the poor octane rating these days. I believe as i learn from youtube

E85 has a really good rating so the theory is you can add more advance but you need more of it through the engine.

IIRC i mapped mine to 32* in the NA portion of the map from around 3.5-4k all the way to the limiter.

    Hi

Correct ign = Max pressure 10-15 dg after top dead-center @ the whole range of rpm/load
