Cutting is easy - metal cutting disc in a grinder will do it. The problem comes in keeping the two 'shorter' pieces square and parallel to enable re-welding! I think i'd bore a hole in each end with a lathe and insert a dowel, clamp in vee blocks and weld but beware as welding will try to bend the shaft out of shape which will cause a vibration!

in my opinion the cut and shorten is not ideal,if you can get your hands on the koln axle halfshafts they are about 1in shorter than an atlas shaft so you.ll end up with a 50in axle and the splines match up with atlas splines. Now the klon shafts dont look as beefy as an atlas shaft but they will still be stronger than a cut and shut shaft.

If you cut shafts the best way to join them is friction welding. There are a few companies that will do it.
