    MOT exemption

    Hi Folks

Could someone clear up the MOT exemption thing for me. Im finding it to be a bit of a grey area!
So my car is now 42 years old and I've just had the MOT reminder from my local garage through the post.

Someone told me that its only standard cars that are exempt from an MOT which my one is not, I mean its period correct but its not standard!
Do i just not give it an MOT this year and from now on, or is there anything legally to ensure that it doesn't need an MOT. Do i need to register it somehow as exempt?

I just didn't want to not give it an MOT and end up getting a hefty fine through the post or get pulled over by the police and given a fine

Any clarity on this would be much appreciated

    Cheers

    Dave

    Re: MOT exemption

Just get it mot'd for the sake of trying to save £45 odd-exemption is just asking for trouble imo. If it fails its probably for good reason.

thats kind of what i was thinking TBH, Its pretty well maintained but id hate to miss something and something goes horribly wrong!
From what ive read, it seems like its eligible for exemption, but its wether or not i just keep the MOTs up for an annual check!

I think its worth having an extra expert pair of eyes give it a once over. I really don't understand the DVLA on this one-if anything needs mot'ing its 40 year old plus cars lol...

Yeah, i think i agree and will get it MOTd

at first i thought, great, save some money, like the free tax its on now. But really, safety is a whole different chestnut and shouldnt be skipped!

    Re: MOT exemption

That can be interpreted in many ways, it was all pretty black and white until it got to the bit that says:
axles and running gear have been changed to improve efficiency, safety or environmental performance

You could argue that a 6 link kit and coilovers are fitted for better handling / safety, a 6 point roll cage is for safety, bigger brakes are for safety and a duratec engine is definitely more efficient than a crossflow or pinto
