Cheers Paul, would absolutely love to sample an escort with that sort of engine and box one day.
I guess you gotta go with your heart in terms of future engine choices but unless the s2000 option is gonna prove to be really unreliable it has to be the best for now as a duratec would mean a fair few changes. Depends what you find has gone inside this one I suppose. Would be a pity if the S2000 has to go as it looks very at home in there now

Yes
is it all back together again now ,paul ??
Do you know what caused the engine failure Paul?
Errr not quite mate - but I've started ordering some shiny new parts, starting with a new Gucchi oil tank I'd say she'll be looking back to normal within the next 6 weeks or so....depending on my next lot of globetrotting F
Not sure of why, but the valve head broke free from the stem!? Everyone who has seen the damage says "material failure" or "one of those things". No sign of over-rev, and no other obvious clues
Cheers,
Paul.
We had the same issue on a K20 Honda engine. It was caused by valve stretch causing piston to touch the valve it happened to us on the Dyno. With hi comp pistons and cams at top engine on the rev range. For us the answer was to increase the depth of the valve cutouts in the pistons. The valves were braking in the collet recess.
When are we going to see this car again Paul ,come on its over two years since that sv now ,and should the thread title not be changed to duratec now ,as the Honda proved to be useless !!!:santa:
Rob, if you could see my bloody air-miles account you'd understand why it's still in pieces
Like you say, I may need a different title - you live and learn
Things are moving in the right direction, so lots of updates over the next month or so I promise - have to fit it all in before I'm away with work again.....
Happy Christmas everyone :santa:
Looking forward to seeing some new pics of progress Paul , seems a shame you have had to give up on the Honda engine . But I am sure the new engine will make this great car even better .
Hope you have a good Xmas and new year :santa:
Hello Ian - its good to hear from you.
It was a major wrench to turn my back on the Honda engine - especially as it was clearly producing the goods on its first event. However, the fact that we couldn't identify exactly what had caused the failure, that I hate spending money on the car for the spec to stand still, and that Matt has been twisting my arm for months made me go the SBD route. The new engine isn't quite as good a spec as Matt's (they wouldn't sell me one the same), but it is a unique spec which should do the business.......
All being well it'll be home before mid-Jan, and then we'll have the rest of the month to complete the plumbing and have it started.
I have some engine pics at work, so I'll get them up soon.
Cheers,
Paul.
If you don't mind me asking what did you do with the S2000 motor you removed?
Are you open to offers on it, as I require some parts for my project.
Thanks
Ben
Sorry Ben - all the Honda parts have already been sold on to a fellow form member to use in his tarmac rally car...
Cheers,
Paul.
Hi Paul, thanks for the quick reply did have a good read of your build but didn't see a mention of gearbox, was you running the s2000 std box or a fully sequential set-up?
I'm going to run with the Sadev 6speed sequential, fitted one new last year in a mk2 with xe power and its been faultless all season can't recommend them enough.
Sorry to hear your jumping ship on the Honda but the duratec is an awesome motor when built to high spec and I'm sure you won't look back!
If I hadn't already committed to the s2000 route I would be doing the same.
Regards
Ben.
IIRC Paul is running the Quaife 60G sequential box
Yes that's right. I started with the standard Honda box to get the car up and running, then we moved to the Quaife 60G.......
Cheers,
Paul
Hi Paul,
I'm currently installing the largest tunnel available but think room may still be tight with the original S2000 gearbox, is this an issue you had?
I'm ultimately doing as you have done and going sequential but need to get the car up and running 1st on the original box plus it's approx 10k for the new box, clutch & ecu!
Regards
Ben
Hi Ben,
I had Gary (retromotorsport on here) build me a custom tunnel for the original box. It wasn't that expensive, left a fair amount or room around the box/bellhousing, and still wasn't wide enough to foul where the steering column comes through the bulkhead.
Would be worth dropping him a PM. I know he's been laid up after a back operation but depending on your timescales he may be able to help?
Cheers,
Paul.
A quick taster with a borrowed engine mocked-up in my car
More soon,
Paul
More pics please let's see the real deal in there
Looks tiny in comparison
And very familiar ?
Hexham and District Motorclub
Better get my passport sorted
Yes mate - but hurry up and get down here. I collected the engine and ancillaries yesterday but it looks so good I'm considering making it a piece of living room art instead
I'm there mate , will be down next sunday for the rebuild (sausage sarnies and plenty of tea too)
I'm sure the wife won't mind you leaving it the living room - NOT !
Well, I've been out tidying the garage this afternoon and the new bellhousing has now found its way into the front room - so I wouldn't rule out the engine just yet
Paul
I dare you Paul ,nice piece of plate glass on the top ,jobs a good in
Gonna need to change the name of this thread mate
It'd have to be the engine - the bellhousing seems tiny compared to how I remember my last one....
No idea how mate or what to put.....

deffo the first one ,much more fitting ,isnt the duratec a mazda ??? so i guess from one rice rocket to another ,would be a good title
and you drive around in a vindaloo
Nothing wrong with a vindaloo - especially after a tweak or two
I have my fingers crossed that I'll get the nod from the exhaust place tomorrow and can hopefully drag it back home tomorrow or Wednesday. Will post some pics of the Max Power system asp
Paul
Ps It wasn't me that changed the thread title
That thread title has made me smile!!
New exhaust too Paul ?
Yes Paul - engine builder has fairly specific recommendations, so I'm having a custom made, 3" repackable system made. It was also needed as the new manifold points in a slightly different direction and i dont want to make any alterations that may negatively affect the engine investment....
Cheers,
Paul
