    Red top pump

    Hi all,

i fitted a red top pump on my escort with standard tank, to run my twin 40’s and with the forethought to go bigger on the carbs in the future. it is the same type as this:

when I was running the engine the other day for the first time, the pump got louder and sounded like it was struggling, I took the filler cap off the tank and when I started the car again it was quiet. I was wondering if the tanks should be vented? I had this problem on a pit bike years ago, where by when I checked the fuel level every time it conked out, it worked again as air has got in the tank again. Drilled a hole in the filler cap and it never conked out again.

just wondering before I get the car on the road, don’t want to conk out lol.

    thanks
    kris

Yes the tank must be vented - it is essential! Usually it will be via the filler cap - sounds like yours is blocked!

Standard tank is vented through a separate connection / hose not via the fillercap.
