    Pinto Camshaft

Hi, my mk2 was in at a specialist for a once over. They say the camshaft has seen better days. I 'm looking for something a bit less aggressive than whats currently fitted, BP300 for road use only. Car runs 2.1 with twin 45s.

What you got that might suit?

I've got 1 camshaft for sale, very good condition, very good chilled cast quality (CatCams) including followers and springs. It is less as the BP300. I did removed this cam from an engine that came in and was upgrade to rally engine.

I'll check the correct data and let you know what to compare with but for sure less as BP300 because I did fitted BP300.

    Dear Allanscort,

Sorry for my late replay but I had to fire up a different pc. I've compared the CatCams profile with the BP300. Honest, it's not better as what you already got for road use. The cam has narrow lobes and still too much duration for being a good road camshaft.

You need something between BP134 and BP300. Sound like you need a BP275 or BP285 but I feel I can do a lot better (only new). Both BP275 and BP285 are more or less "old Skool" profiles. BP300 is like RL31, Newman 4,75. Very good cams with wide power band but on the fast side for a road cam.

Hi onyd, thanks for checking, think I'll just go new and put it into the garage for them to change it and see what they suggest. The guy knows his escorts, trust his judgement.

    Re: Pinto Camshaft

i just fitted a newman P4 275 degree cam to a pinto in a westfield running 45's (36 chokes) and bvh ( but only 9.5 compression) it worked a treat, it would take full throttle from 2000 rpm and pull well past 6000, in fact in the lower gears it was easy to run upto 7000rpm, which isnt wise on a std bottom emd

Hi Graham, thanks for info. I don't know what compression ratio its running. Is this an issue for selecting the best cam? Sure its just standard bottom end.

to an extent, yes cams and compression's have to match, a race cam wont work properly without really high compression, really high compression and mild cams wont work the engine will just detonate to destruction. so if you engine was built to suit a really hot cam you will have to lower the cr to run a road cam
