Escort Boot emblem fixings - Thinking of an alternative fixing

All, just about to re-attach the "Escort" badge to the boot of my Mk2. I noted that the original clips are available from a variety of sources. They look like they fit into the panel from the front and then the badge fits into the clip. If that is correct, I am thinking that a more secure way to fix them would be with a Starlock washer on the back side of the badge.

Am I right in thinking the clips do go in from the front and has anyone fixed the badges on in an alternative way ?

They do go in from the front but starloks would be more secure providing you can get behind to fit them

The only problem with not using the standard bushing mounts is that the badge would then rattle around. The bushing method holds the badge in the mounting holes to keep it from vibrating and chipping the paint. In my experience, the standard mountings have never been a problem.

Ok thanks. My Bootlid is fibreglass so the rattling shouldn't be and issue and I can get to the back easily. I will test fit to see how it goes.

The standard holes on the steel boot lid are big enough for the bushings to fit. If your GRP bootlid does not already have the holes you can drill them small to suit and they'd be no rattling.

I'm not sure how big those pins are on the back of the badge, but IIRC they are a soft metal. Maybe tap an M4 or M5 thread on to them and fix with nuts. Just an idea.

I am still to drill the holes, I think I saw somewhere that the pin size is around 3.2mm, so a 3mm hole should ensure a nice snug fit. Will measure tonight. Nice suggestion to thread them, only concern would be the strength of them once tapped.

I appreciate your concerns - I had the same dilemma when fixing up a '68 Cooper 'S' but the little nylon plugs worked nicely - drill hole so the plug is snug / tight fit and push the emblem pins in squarely and firmly. The pins expand the nylon slightly to grip both pin and bodywork - enough that you need a tool and a delicate touch to pry them off again. For real OCD fixing a blob of silicone under the emblem would assist!
