there are a good few ways of telling apart from the log book, the shell has to be genuine too.

better doing a search on here to get the full specs of a genuine rs2000.

sounds like you need to take someone with you who knows what one "looks like" behind the front cover.

Yeah a second pair of eyes is always good
My worry is if it’s a stolen car and been cloned with a false plate
I will check all the VIN etc
Guy has no receipts but it looks like it’s had a restoration at some point
And he’s selling for his father in law
But I’m cautious when it comes to this kind of thing and don’t want to be stung

This isn't a given anymore - replacement plates can be stamped to match originals. I asked a similar question way back on RS Escorts and unfortunately there are some that know what to look for and a lot that don't and those that do, 'choose' not to impart that knowledge - maybe for their own sick twisted pleasure?

so why is his father in law not selling it ? That's always the good excuse for not having enough information when asked. "oh i don't know it's my father in laws"

These days checking the vin and log book means its got the the correct vin and logbook a search on ebay will buy you ones of those. They may not have originally been off that shell tho.

no receipts for a car that old surely some stuff will have built up over the years, especially for the better end models ?

Plenty information knocking about ,try get a copy of Factory original sporting Mk2 Escorts . A great Ref book with loads of photos and info about spec and trim . Also Rally Sport Escort forum has loads of information but you might have to search about a bit . Off top of my head under front wings on the suspension tower there should be two strengthening plates at the bottom and one at the top . Also one on the kick panel too . The passenger side floor panel has a bracket to keep the speedo cable away from the exhaust . The gearbox tunnel should be made slightly bigger to get the RS2000 gearbox in and moved back also . Hole for gearbox moved back and strengthening bracket cut to allow this . The rear exhaust hanger should be a double one . Small bracket in boot to put strap round to keep spare wheel in place. Strut tops should have strengthened plate on and start with GCAT. Unfortunately all the brackets and plates mentioned are available to buy and convert a standard shell so is a bit of a mine field . I prob missed something but if any questions here to help.

One i did forget it should have anti tramp bar brackets towards rea of the shell. Couple of other visuals, make sur has right nose cone there are early and later ones. if genuine custom where the clock and binacle is in dash on passenger side the hole was factory punched out and not rough cut later so should look neat. mine is a poverty spec thats had it cut later . it does look neat but yuo can tell not been punched out by a tool in factory.

    This is my friends car
    It’s 100% genuine rs2000 custom
It was purchased last year from auction at the classic restoration show at Birmingham , probably why the lack of receipts . The only reason he is selling is to raise some funds otherwise it would be kept , it’s a lovely GENUINE car and worth a bit more than he’s asking for it . If I had the cash I would buy it without a second thought stunning car . Oh and his step son isn’t selling it he just put the advert up as my friend isn’t very good at that stuff but trust me he will be there to show anyone round it .

That's good to hear and adds a bit more credibility to the specific car. The OP was asking how to verify a mk2 RS2000 is genuine given the value of these cars you do need to be careful. Being armed with a bit of knowledge when going to look always helps.

Totally agree mate (: that’s why he asked me to look at it at the auction before he bid . I’ve owned quite a few over the years so know my way round them . It was purchased to put away as an investment but unfortunately circumstances have changed . Yea there are lots of in lawful people in the world now unfortunately and the money the old fords are bringing in we do need to be careful I agree 100% but not everyone is in lawful . Few bits done on this car , K&n being replaced back to standard air filter , cast rs manifold instead of the 4 branch and a nice set of polished alloys ( asthe ones on car are powdercoated) would sort that

i fully agree - not just this car , same for any potential moneypit..............
and i will add that i am not saying anything above is not true, just pointing out that unless the poster(2 posts both here) is known personally to members then it carries little weight with me
