Type 9 gearbox speedo drive gear fix

Hi all.

Ive had a look through the search and cant find anything so Im hoping someone can help.

I have a 2.8i Capri with a 5 speed type 9 manual box fitted. All the gears work fine but the speedo gear doesnt turn when the car is driving. Has anyone replaced/fixed this problem?
If so could you tell me the steps you need to take to fix it? or have a guide somewhere that can help.

you need to work out whats broken first, it could be the speedo the cable or the driver in the gearbox, cables most likely

Hi, thanks for the quick reply. I have tried a new speedo cable with the same result. I turned the gearbox end of the cable and the needle moves on the dial. I looked at the scoket it plugs into on the gearbox and when jacked up and put in gear the socket doesnt spin when given throttle. I assumed it was the speedo drive gear. Does that sound right? Surely it should be spinning when the wheels are in motion.

ok sounds like the problem is in the box, the box has two gears in it a worm gear on the output shaft and a driven gear that goes in the side of the box,

the later you can remove, the former require the gearbox stripped
