    Na cosworth power !!!

Hi all, I have just had my NA cosworth engine rebuilt, fully ported head all port matched. Twin 48's. Re profiled cams ( builders spec) 37mm inlet 33mm exhaust, Millington up and over manifold. Titan dry sump. 11.3-1cr. All steel internals. 5mm@tdc. 4mm@tdc cam timing. Ignition timing 16 at 1000rpm , 28 at maximum advance. The big one. On the rolling road last week it made. 267bhp @ 8050rpm 170.1 torque @7000rpm. We did a run up around 9000rpm but no gains were made. How do my figures compare to others with this spec motor.

You feel the torque is OK?

    Re: Na cosworth power !!!

Well, I was not paying enough attention to the max torque numbers. Probably because it's not in Nm and my brain can't calculate fast enough. What I do see here is that you dyno guy has probably given you wrong (or even fake) numbers.

Your max torque is 170 (232 Nm) at 7000 lbft RPM and max power is 267 Bhp at 8050 RPM. If you would have 170 lbft at 8050 RPM you got 260 Bhp. But your max torque was not at 8050 RPM and even then you still do not have 267 Bhp.

Funny, can you post the graph?

    Re: Na cosworth power !!!

I can't even post a picture from my phone,
Torque was 180 not 170 my mistake but it made max torque at 7000rpm ( 100% ) and max power at 8000rpm.
I don't really care what you think I just wondered if the torque sounded right.
No doubt you are renowned engine builder, I am not in just drive the car.

    Re: Na cosworth power !!!

dunno it dont sound right to me, what size engine is it? torque figure sounds too strong for a 2.0.

for it be making power at the revs your saying the cams must be pretty mad, in which case compression ratio figure sounds too low, unless its a fairly big engine

    Re: Na cosworth power !!!

OK, with 180 I calculate 246 Nm and now the numbers can be correct. 246 Nm means it is a 2 ltr engine, 8050 RPM max power also indicate it is a 2 Ltr.

A very good 2 Ltr if these numbers are correct.

    Re: Na cosworth power !!!

I 100% believe the power figures, the engine builder and rolling road tuner were over the moon. I just feel my 4-1 Millington manifold isn't a bit restrictive, I have a 4-2-1 Tony law manifold to try, Edwards motorsport have said my engine should make around 191-197 torque so fingers crossed.

    Re: Na cosworth power !!!

240 Nm is already a good number for a 2 Ltr, going over 250 Nm will not be easy. 270 Nm not sure it is possible.

We are talking about 2 Ltr????

sounds like a great engine, but if it really is 2.0 your talking almost 100 lbft per litre, which i cant see you doing

    Re: Na cosworth power !!!

I put the Tony law manifold on last night so back on the rolling road next week, I will update either way. May lose a few bhp but hopefully gain some torque, yes it is a 2.0lt engine.
I have been running Honda engine's for years and my last rally car K20 was almost standard other than no cathe, Type R cams, that made 244bhp 174ft torque again 2.0lt

ok fair play, although i rather suspect the dyno is flattering the engine builders

    Re: Na cosworth power !!!

Is that because of the engine's old design ?
There are plenty of 2.0lt motors out there making good power, XE, K20, the list goes on and lots make 280bhp + and 190ft torque.
We will see as the current rolling road is away so I have to go elsewhere

I have to say I have had Heads done by Brett Sim's for years even back when he did heads for Longmans and the touring cars. He did a Honda B16b head and that engine made 219bhp and 125ft torque, that was a 1.6.

    Hi Graham, 11-8-1 CR.
    37MM inlet value.
    33mm exhaust valves.
Brett Sims Re profiled the cams, yes it does jump into life it's an unbelievably livley engine, so response. It's in the back of my ex Robin Herd Leyton house Darrian T90, with a Hewland FT box bolted to it.flywheel is very light.

arhh, 11.8 sounds much more like it than 11.3

the yb head really is a poor design when it comes to airflow, as standard they are not much better than a pinto, so in N/a application you dont normally get good power, simply because the port size, angle and even valve sizes just dont flow well without a turbo to shove the air in.

the other engines you mention flow around 50% more

    Re: Na cosworth power !!!

One of the most highly developed 2.0 NA Cosworth engines was built by John Wilcox for Rob Gravetts Sierra Sapphire BTCC in the early nineties and they had the backing of Ford Motor Company behind them. They tried every permutation to get more power and torque and I don't think they got close to those figures.

no really, the ports are still too small , wrong angle etc etc
