Lotus twincam - quaife rocket
Hi ,
i have an escort mk1 ( mexico ) with a lotus twincam engine .
the gearbox is a quaife rocket straight cut .
which axle ratio would be the best for this setup ?
it is a fast road car .

Re: Lotus twincam - quaife rocket
it depends on what your after a 3.54 diff will make first gear go forever and make it difficult to get off the line, not very nice in traffic or do a hill start or something, at the other end of the scale a 4.4 will make it easy to /keep on cam/accelerate like hell, but scream its nuts off on a motorway. a 3.7 or 3.9 might not be a bad compromise for road use

Re: Lotus twincam - quaife rocket
hi , i believe i am running a 3.9:1 now .
the wheels are 13" . The top speed of the car is a bit to low . Maybe i will change the gearbox to a 5 speed .
would it make a big difference buying wheels 60r instead of 50r ?

Re: Lotus twincam - quaife rocket
For road use, you need a 5 speed. For sure, not a straight cut box. It will scream all day long. Usual standard 5 speed is all you need, will work fine with 3,9

Re: Lotus twincam - quaife rocket
5 speed will make a bigger difference than changing tyres

Re: Lotus twincam - quaife rocket
Would the t9 gearbox scream in 5th ? My rocket box now runs fine ( quiet ) in 4th gear .
Of course this is 1-1 gear .

a standard T9 wont, one with straight cut gears will

Re: Lotus twincam - quaife rocket
I think 'scream' is the wrong word to describe a straight cut box - whine is better and should be noticeable even if box is fresh. With either a Rocket gearset / type E box or a T9 box - 4th is 1:1, 5th is overdrive 0.82:1 so overall revs will drop and be more 'relaxed' in top gear but the low 1st is a pain with a 3.9:1 diff - changing that for a taller 1st would make sense.
