mk1 grp4 shell, historic or ultimate spec
when building a mk1 escort grp4 shell, would you say there was more demand for a historic spec shell or a full on spec with all the bits.
currently building mk1 shell to grp4 spec but unsure as to what spec to build the shell to help ease of resale, resale value.
thanks

Re: mk1 grp4 shell, historic or ultimate spec
Hi there,
I am currently building a Historic spec MK1, alot of the stuff you can do is the same for both builds, the major difference is in the link boxes you can only run short boxes in historic.
You can put a weld in cage, large tunnels etc,
couple of pics of the one I am doing, have plenty more if you need any.
Cheers

I ask again. What is the number of the Group 4 homologation for the MK1. I can not find any. I know of only Group 2 homologation.

Re: mk1 grp4 shell, historic or ultimate spec
Based on what has been put on the british rally forum recent, mk1's were never homologated to gp4, only ever gp1/2. LVX942J at least did run in gp4 allthough without any homologation. It used a gp2 car with mods done as allowed generally under gp4. Look for pics of LVX running with and without front qtr bumpers to see the two versions.
Only the mk2 Escort RS was homologated to gp4. The RS1800 was only homologated as an evolution of the mk1 RS1600 hence only gp2. All very complicated!
Beware of roll cages and historic regs. Depending on the championship you do depends on whether you are restricted to a 6pt cage or can go multipoint. The pics posted are of a nice multipoint cage but would be not allowed in some championships as far as I am aware although it appears ok according to the web site mentioned below.
BHRC, FIA and other historic championships (belgium etc) all have there own take on what is allowed and not.
Check out www.hrct.co.uk for some guidance for a popular british take on the rules.
Another thing to be careful of is that what is permitted on one car is not allowed on another. For instance, large gearbox tunnels are allowed on rs1600 but not on any other model of mk1. The ultimate spec mk1 therfore comes down to what type you are building. An ultimate RS1600 will be far different from an ultimate Mexico or Twin Cam.

Re: mk1 grp4 shell, historic or ultimate spec
In 1976 the FIA had changed the Annex J for group 2. Then could not start a lot of Gr 2 cars. These old Gr 2 cars were allowed to start for 1 year as a Gr 4 cars. Most of the works built for 1977> no new Gr 2 cars. Some of the old works Gr 2 where make homologated as a Gr 4 (Fiat, Opel, Ford, other). This Group 4 car was adapted to the new Appendix J. That was the beginning of the MK 2 Group 4 RS1800 (Homologation No 650). All other Escort were not homologated for Group 4. The RS 2000 can use so no group 4 parts. These are the FIA rules.

Re: mk1 grp4 shell, historic or ultimate spec
I realize this is an old thread, but I have a question on the tunnel (looks like OEM escort automatic) is this FIA approved for historic MK1 classes.
or any idea where I can get a definitive answer.
