mk4 Transit Pinto ignition problem
Can anyone help with a problem on our 2.0? It stopped dead whilst running the other day, the engine is fine but we have no spark. Have proved the wiring from ecu to distributor, the coil and leads and dizzy head are good. We cant find any info on test data for the ecu fitted to this model, local garage books just don't have this ecu in. We have power to 2 pins into the ecu marked in white on the photo but don't even know if this is right. Does anyone have any test data for this ecu? Is there another way we can proceed with parts from a different Ford model or is there a new ignition system that is not hard or expensive to replace the original with? Any thoughts or info greatly received.
thanks in advance,
Luke.

might sound obvious, but is the dizzy turning?

hi, yes it is turning.

Re: mk4 Transit Pinto ignition problem
Most ECU's like yours are interchangeable at least to try and get it running. Timing might somewhat be different though (depending on CR of engine etc).
I repaired these in the old days, most of the time the high current transistor for the coil was kaputt.
Have a new ECU here, same partno. as yours.

Thanks, good to know parts are still about, I might need that! Going to test the hall sensor tomorrow. How much would you want for the ecu if its needed? I understand there is a fault reader plug near the battery on this van and a Gunson reader should work with it but don't have one yet, would that be the best way of checking if the ecu is dead? And do you know if getting power in to the ecu on the 2 pins is right and all thats needed?

Re: mk4 Transit Pinto ignition problem
Will have a look at my old Autodate databooks. In the mean time google the ECU number or "ESC2 pinning".
Gunson FCR on these ECU's isn't doing a lot.

Re: mk4 Transit Pinto ignition problem
So checked for 5v at the dizzy and zero power anywhere. Only power we can find is on the 2 pins into the ecu and we dont know if this is right or not, can't find any info at all on pin data online.
I think the ecu is for ignition and carb control but the old carb has been replaced with an equivalent manual choke Webber, the original electronic carb had some bad habits! On the overrun as engine speed slowed it would often suddenly accelerate, normally just as you pulled up to a junction or at some other crazy time. Choke also had a mind of its own so manual one has fixed all that and it runs stronger except for a slight hesitation as you give it lots of throttle, passed mot with very low emissions. I take it just replacing the ecu like for like is the way forward even with the changed carb.
How quick could you post out the ecu you have? Was hoping to use the van on Sunday for a family holiday, its our day/surf/camper.

Re: mk4 Transit Pinto ignition problem
ECU will work without the electronic carb it was designed for except for closed throttle application. Then it could do unexplainable things. Choke on the electronic carb has to be connected to the W-terminal of the alternator. If it wasn't carb think it is cold hence the sudden acceleration.
Can post the ESC2 ECU tomorrow if you pay by PayPal but I am in the Netherlands so don't know how long it will take to get to you. Maybe look on ebay and find an ESC2 ECU near you.

Re: mk4 Transit Pinto ignition problem
I can't find any ecs2 ecu at the moment so happy to pay and get it posted, did you say yours is new?
Do you want to send me a paypal request? I can send you a pm with details.
