Mk2 Ford Consul 1962 gearbox change

I have a mk2 ford consul 1962 375 deluxe. It has the original 1703 engine and 3 speed gearbox, column change and i want to change the gearbox to either a 4 speed or 5 speed floor change. Can anybody advise me which gearbox would fit? And how i would go about changing it?

    Thank you

easiest way would be to get a mk3 zephyr 4 or zephyr 6 floor change box, if you get a mk3 bell housing you can fit a mk1 mk2 transit box with a long lever, and you could get one with overdrive, think you can fit a type 9 but not sure which bellhousing

think you can fit a pinto to original gearbox so you should be able to fit consul engine to gearbox for a pinto but what needs modifying and what clutch i have no idea

What engine's fitted in the Consul V4 or inline 4 pre x flow? If it's the inline 4 then any Ford RWD gearbox should be able to mate up as they all share the same bolt fitting on the engine block. Your problems might come with flywheel, clutch and your Hydraulics.

V4 engine to gearbox bolt pattern is an Essex type fitment - A proper 2000e gearbox and bellhousing from a Corsair 2000e would fit as would a Corsair 1700 gearbox and bellhousing.

Type 9 could be done with a Essex V6 bellhousing but you would end up with the starter motor on the other side and would need to change to cable clutch.

For that reason it would be easier to use the Corsair V4 bellhousing and a 3 rail gearbox.

I think I have got my engine types mixed up - I didn't realise the engine you are talking about was an inline 4. The engines I'm waffling on about are V4!

The 1703 Consul doesn't have the same bell to engine bolt pattern as the traditional 60's 70's 80's 90's inlines either. Though I was told the 3 rail boxes (2000e) do bolt to the whatever bellhousing the 1703 used as standard. But dont take that as gospel either. (possibly pub talk)
