    Single Cylinder Test

If somebody wanted to test a new Pinto cylinder head design but wanted to make a single cylinder test first, do you think it would be possible to use a regular block/crank with only 1 piston/rod? Obviously the other 3 cylinders would need to be sealed such that oil and water can still flow where it needs to (10mm aluminium plate).

I have no idea what loads this may place on the crank. My thoughts are that it would be fine. An alternative might be to use all pistons/rods to help keep the crank balanced.

Sounds stupid but I'm not exactly able to cast a bespoke single cylinder Pinto block at home!

    Just spit-balling............

Are you talking about a full running test? For your new head or modifying the existing pinto shape.

If it's the former, I'm just trying to work out the logistics of this in my head.

I'm guessing this is post design stage, then the initial prototype (3d printer?) then flowbench, adjust and more benchtime, then a CNC version but with only one cylinder pre the whole cylinder head???

Is that what you're thinking? SO you can modify one without the need for the entire head?

Without pistons and rods in the other 3 redundant cylinders it'll vibrate like a b'stard! And you've still have to arrange cam and drive. Subject to what you are actually planning to do it may be easier to take a std pinto head, machine it out and skull it, then machine in your chamber and ports? This could run as a 4 cylinder but how you'd get the empirical evidence the new design is better or not will be tricky? Sounds interesting though!

No need for cam drive. I suspect it would vibrate hence maybe fitting all 4 pistons.

Shaun, hopefully the design of the head itself will be workable then I only need to change the valve design to change valve flow/timing.
