    mk1 escort st170 (well163 acyually lol)

    well, finally got my mk1 set up last week, after a very bumpy and lengthy journey! got a st170 motor in it, including the stock inlet. got it down to ffairfach south wales couple of week ago to get the ecu set up. big thanks to that man!! got a 131bhp at the wheels, without the vvt working. am very impressed with how it goes, it will put shame to many four figured pinto's! basic rundown of the car,
    st170 engine
    tran x 5speed t9 box
    baby atlas semi floating, 4.63 diff on ford msport lsd
    ally callipers front and rear, bias box
    coilovers billys allround
    turrets
    6 link
    plus loads more probably
    going for mot this week, and a geometry set up. hoping to have it out in the lanes in march on its maiden voyage! will try and get some pics up soon. cant wait to take it for a proper blast when the geometry is set up right!

    what carbs are you using and what do you think you will get with the vvt running
    i am currently working on on putting an st170 motor into my mk1 after running a pinto on fortys for a year

    hi si, im running with the standard st induction manifold plenum chamber etc, have to due to road rally regs. not sure id gain more bhp's, but defo more tourqe and for longer i believe with the vvt, but am certainly not complaining with its performance as it is! i know of someone who has the right ecu, but again with standard induction, and has 180+bhp @ the flywheel. am sure you'd gain more with the right carbs/throttle bodies, but couldnt say on the tourqe, as its that that the standard induction is good for, and is what im after. a friend of mine who runs very powerful pintos has claimed that my performance equivelant in a pinto would equate to £3-£4k, and still wouldnt have the take off power. a very new territory to me, and no doubt a very steep learning curve!

    Dyn Car Gwyn, My name is Peredur Davies, maybe you know my father Ifor as he used to organize the meirion. I won the novice class as a nav in 2009 on the llyn and have a good bearing on the eastern side of the peninsula, as i lve in Pencaenewydd, just outside pwllheli.

    sounds good peredur! name dont ring a bell, but would prob recognize you by sight, or your father. i havent been on the scene for around 5 yr now, the last rally i did was the llyn 2006, which i retired from. the car has gone an extensive overhaul since then, so should be i good form. i have contacted my previous nav, so pending what he says, you might just get a call. but will defo let you know either way, will be around next weekend, so might give u a bell.

    hi there, no pics at the moment, will try and sort some out over weekend. but basically, you need to install the airbox 'upside down', its a bit of a squeeze, but does go, and does work. think you have marginally mor head clearance on a mk2, must warn you, there will be a lot of swearing involved! lol

    Can't fault vince. I always go there. Highly recommended. Good grunt for the car. Had various pintos and 130 at wheels is plenty for fun

    well, after playing over weekend, and various drives with other pinto owners inside, the car drives nothing like a 180bhp pinto, been said that off the line the st motor would be gone! good bhp figures, but the torque is impressive, amolst a straight line from start to end. dont know what vince has done, but feck in 'ell, it pulls like a train, regardless if it on a steep hill or not! top job that man!

    My last pinto was 184 bhp at 6.5k rpm so not a big revver ( only tool it to just over 7 in bursts) and running brooks 48 splits and even when set up properly it would only start to pull properly from around 3k rpm with the Newman 4.5 cam. As a comparison of modern engines my modern duratec on throttle bodies, cams etc will pull quite clean from 1.5 k rpm (when driving gently on road etc etc) and never bogs down if you come off cam like old pinto.
    The old pinto felt quick when driving because of the more peaky nature whereas the modern engine willbe accelerating more smoothly pulling more lower ( and mid range) end rpm where realistically on road rallies you will be using mid range torque ( in farmyards, fields whites)
    Modern engine developments have made my car much more drivable and more enjoyable.

    will get some pics up soon, need to give it a set of mudflaps, s oscars and a good scrub! hoping to get a few events done this year, do will see how it goes on the llyn, if im lucky enough to get a run, entry has been returned and paid up, so fingers crossed! i have soooo much familiarizing to be done on driving the car, cant wait to get it on its maiden voyage tho!

    Are you running standard super oscars? We've fitted a 35W HID kit to ours and the difference is amazing. Well worth the £50 off e-bay (and from a UK supplier).

    MMm, interesting one Phil, answer to your question, yes I am, would this be something that would be allowances regs, or just something that wouldn't be picked up? I converted a previous car to hid and transformed the lights, so appreciate how good they are.

    lol! we did indeed! am very intrigued by chris palmers 180+ bhp, i feel i wont settle until i have it! lol! will be prob down to see ya later this year or next year, when ive collected enough tokens, then we can try and squeeze some more out of it! dont forget, with age comes experience and knowledge!

    Well Alan, i have read the blue book and it specifically says that auxiliary lamps must not be of gas discharge type. On that basis i would say the the headlamps can. That's my interpretation.

    funny how a change of words can totally rephrase things! i remember now, some stink was raised about it years ago! it can become tricky with headleamps, as per mot, it should have self levelling suspension, or auto levelling headlamps, and headlamp wash facility! just depends how keen the scruts are! ah well, the idea was there! cheers fella! (noticed how i didnt use old man there! oops! lol )

    As you now know, Chris is running the DTA S60 which enables you to have a separate map for the VVT on the ST170 engine. I would like to think that with the altered timing we did to yours , 190 bhp would be available from Chris's car. It certainly helped with yours.
    Having read the Blue Book , my interpretation is that you can run the HID headlamps as it specifically says Auxiliary lights must not be of gas discharge type. HTH

    would it be possible to change the loom to ecu connector? as i really dont wanna change the loom as well! if we can do this, then i'll save some big bucks! might be worth having a pop at the hid's, dont recall them being expensive to convert!
