I am planning to build a exact replica of a Zakspeed Capri 15 years ago I bought a zakspeed engine and the seller told me that it just had his rebuild and dyno..680Bhp.
Today I took the engine apart and the seller wasn,t telling stoy,s it,s a division 1 engine , 1745CC 680Bhp and it was realy rebuild

If I was a betting man, I would hazard a guess that the engine was out of Martin Schanche's Rallycross Escorts, but I have been wrong once before!

The engine came out of a Capri when these cars where out homologated all the spares came out on the market , this particular engine was shortly used in a Gr6 car these cars had the engine in the rear thats why the turbo was placed overthere.
I bought it in Germany with loads of other Zakspeed (engine)stuff which I gradually have been selling in the last years.
With the stuff there where/are crankshafts with names as Winklehock on it , I write where/are because do have more but it,s in the dark en dusty catacombes of my company (see the dusty intercooler) there are also some steel zakspeed blocks with cooling ribs on the outside of the liners.

    Hello,

remember a company called Duel or Duell from years ago, is that you?

Very nice original engine you have! Think the light green is the colour Zakspeed used to paint his engine blocks.

Fantastic, cant believe stuff like this still exists.....its like we have gone back in time 25-30 years! Also crazy is that all of the people in this thread would love to have that 30 year old engine in their car over the current one

    Re: Zakspeed engine

What a nice engine. Which engine block is it based on?
I don't think it is a Capri or Escort engine since the position of the Turbo is to high and to far in the back.
In my opinion this setup is for a rear engine car. I found three rear engie Zakspeed. The Formula 1 cars, the Zakspeed C1/4 for group C and the Mustang Probe GTP. I only found engine pics of the F1 cars, they had the turbo mounted very low and about the mid of the engine.
I think the engine is out of an Zakspeed C1/4, they had displacement of 1700cc or 1800cc and where based on the Capri engine. I didn't find any information to the Mustang Probe GTP, but I think it had like the Mustan GTP (with front engine) a 2.3l ohc (the US Pinto?) based dohc Zakspeed engine. This might be the source for the cylinder head escoracer has.

Still having the sound of the starting Zakspeed Turbo in my ears. Stood right beside it when they fired it up at the 100year event in colgone.

    Re: Zakspeed engine

i beleive that every assumption you just made is 100% correct. it corresponds to every bit of research i have done, in my books
escort and capris when turboed by zakspeed, had an iron block. but i learn new things every day.....

i expect the gtp to be 2.3L based, thats why i have ordered a headgasket to check if we are correct

    Re: Zakspeed engine

The engine is a alloy Cosworth engine as used also on the Capris . I know for a fact this one came out of a Capri and as I already wrote was shortly used in a Group 6 car..not F1 or Group C.
The reason why the write that the engine was based on a 1300(steel) Kent is because the Group 5 regulation which says the car must used an original shortblock.

Some photo,s of the Mucke car and the one which was restored at Zakspeed ( see album of " Escort Tc" on this forum ) both with a alloy Cosworth block

nice car, but unfortunately not FIA legal. as far as i know they retained the aluminum spaceframe and put a steel cage additionally so they can do show events but nothing in anger.

    Re: Zakspeed engine

Hi Harrier , I never told you that Zakspeed uses them what you got there is probably a early thick block , the original thick Ford block had this number H 711 F 6010 DA and lateron the AX blocks (see photo)
If it is a F2 engine it would have had a oil adaptor on the main oil gallery just underneed the left waterplug ( you can see it on one of my pictures)
Escoracer, Mucke can race his alloy rollcage without any problems , the FIA says you can when it,s an intergral structure with the chassis ( Porsche 917)
I took some photos today and saw that there where also different waterpump castings on de Zakspeed engines , there is one with a bypas to let air out of the pump...must be an evo pump.
    I found on the engine breather the inscripiton 17T 1 81 which means 17 turbo div1 1981 ??
