duratec 2.0 cam sprockets on 2.3

I have read online that many people have stuck the 2.0 duratec head on a 2.3 bottom end, so this should work but i though id better double check.

The 2.3 head i removed from the mazda has VVT and bigger 50 tooth cam sprockets, the 2.0 uses smaller 38 tooth sprockets.
I'm having a hard time finding a 50 tooth sprocket to replace the VVT sprocket, can i just use the smaller 38 tooth sprockets off my 2.0 head?

Unfortunately no as the crank teeth count has to be 1/2 of whatever the cam tooth count is - or the valves will meet the pistons after a few revolutions! Just use a 19 tooth 2.0L crank gear?

Re: duratec 2.0 cam sprockets on 2.3

i'm having real difficulty finding the 50 tooth pulley, so if i did go for the 2.0 cam and crank sprockets could this actually work?
i am mindful that the 2.3 block is approx 20mm taller than the 2.0 so would i just use the 2.3 chain and the tensioner will take up the slack of the smaller sprockets?

trying to find info online but cant find anything.

    cheers, Steve

no way will the tensioner take up that much difference in sprocket size

You need to speak to someone that builds competition Duratecs, you can't mix and match different size timing wheels or sprockets as the timing won't be correct as everything will travel at different speeds as mentioned by Kat!

Surely it shouldn't be too difficult to split the chain and remove a few links to shorten it then re rivet it with a soft link - i've done it a few times with bike cam chains - an industrial chain / bearing supplier should be able to match up a link for you.

You'd be better of speaking to a respectable competition engine builder than a Mazda main dealer as I have already said. The first thing your main dealer will ask is reg number or chassis number, if you have n't got those you are on to a loser.

My advice was to speak to an engine builder with your problem. You can't take chances with cam timing issues.

I totally misread that, had been a long day.
I thought you were saying to get a standard 50 tooth pulley from a main dealer 😆
