Rear wheel on one side has camber

    Hi all

A mate of mine has just bought a mk1 Escort
its a lovely looking car but I noticed that the wheel one side has quite a bit of negative camber
Ive looked but can’t see anything untoward
He’s told me it’s got a decent axle in with LSD and 2 piece shafts
can someone give any pointers to what it could be
    cheers

If it has adjustable TCA's then perhaps it just needs adjusted...or worse could be a bent strut, or worse still could be that its had a strut top inner wing repair and the strut top mount is in the wrong place, photos would help.

Are you suggesting the car has big negative camber on the rear .?

If it's an English axle there's a fair chance that it could be a bent axle casing, a common problem from a heavy pounding on Rallies.

That's how it reads to me...

I was thinking it could be a bent casing too.

Do you know if they can be straightened
Or is it s new axle
It’s got all brackets and a brace on so he would like to keep if possible

sorry i thought it was front, is it postive camber, if so sounds like someone has drifted into a kerb, done it myself, when it happened to me it was only the hub flange on the halfshaft that bent, not the axle casing.

    No
It’s negative camber so hitting a kerb would give positive

Unless the halfshaft hub flange is bent and has rotated, have you moved the car to see if the camber angle goes from neg to pos? if not then youre looking at a bent axle.

    No
    It always stays negative
    Wheel doesn’t wobble at all

I've seen an Atlas straightened, you didn't say whether it's an Atlas or English.

Any axle can be straightened with heating and careful measurement but for the price you’ll pick up a new axle casing I’d just replace. I bought a good Mk1 casing for £50 just a few months ago.

As Erik says pick up another casing if you can find one. They do seem to be getting in short supply now as the F2 Stock Cars use them.

If you go down the route of straightening it you'll need to find where abouts its bent and then make a jig to hold it in. When we used the English axle for Road Rallies we never bothered straightening them when they got bent as the axles were never in short supply.

there is a way to straighten it still on the car! you can do it with a big bead of weld, run a big bead of weld around the bottom 3rd of the axle, the weld will contract and straighten it, of course its a bit hit and miss, too much weld and you will have positive camber. ive even seen axles where toe has been corrected like that

Ingenious - Very ghetto / Red neck solution, but if it works!

    Thanks Graham
can you be more specific of where to put the bead of weld
Not quite sure where you mean
    I think it’s something we’ll try
    cheers

Re: Rear wheel on one side has camber

That would depend on where and how much its bent, you would have to measure it....you can achieve the same thing but just applying heat without welding.

Re: Rear wheel on one side has camber

The best way would be to make a jig measuring distances between the top and bottom of the halfshaft flange across the width of the axle, then heat slowly in the area you need to contract keeping close eye on the measurement changing, then allow to cool slowly repeating the process untill you get the correct measurement, in my opinion welding would introduce too much localised heat and have less control.
