    Helicoils in a head?

The threads in the head for the cam cover are a little bit suspect, with some tightening up and the others i'm wary of tightening them too much!

Has anyone got any advice on how to fit them? And is it possible or sensible to fit them into the head?

fitting them is piece of cake mate, if you havent completely stripped a thread best to run a drill down the hole to remove the thread, its then just a case of tapping an oversize thread in the hole and winding in the helicoil, buy a kit it will come with helicoils a tap, insertion tool and pointer thing to break the tag off the helicoil once its screwed in,

some highly stressed applications i helicoil threads before they fail in the first place.

Agree with Graham, they are a piece of cake to fit and if it is a highly stressed thread it is worth doing before it fails, the only thing I would add is in my experiance I would file the "snap off" grove in the tag a little deeper so it breaks off easier.

never had any issues with the tag myself, i guess some are better quality than others, what i do recomend is to wind the helicoil so its a little below the surface of the hole

    Thanks.

So does the tag go at the bottom or the top as you wind it in?

it goes in the bottom and if it gets stuck just use a magnetic screwdriver and lift it out
