Re: engine builders cast your eye over my xflow rebuild please

I have just been through emails to see what oil pump I bought and it was a high capacity/high pressure. Perhaps too much pressure?
Its hard to tell wether the filter seal popping has forced oil to the front and back of engine and have a rocker cover leak.
I have looked at clutch and flywheel inside gearbox and no oil is present. If it had come out of the back of engine at the rate oil was coming out, be expected to be inside gearbox housing?

Tomorrow i I will put a tray under engine and refill with oil. Now I have new rocker cover and gasket In place. Re tighten oil filter and film what happens when I start it.

high pressure/high capacity pump wont cause oil leaks from oil seals and gaskets

So what could be the cause of the oil filter seal popping out the side and empty the contents of my sump in seconds. I have sorted rocker cover leak. The oil filter is properly tightened up and seal seated before fitting but then blows out. Looks impossible for it to squeeze out the gap but it does.

No oil cooler or sandwich plate. Filled with 3.6 litres of fresh oil.

Seen it before that a high capacity pump give similar problems (thick oil?).
Anyway, change the oilpump for a std item, it's a quick job. Then you can rule out the pump.

I have taken the pump apart. The shin and spring on pressure relief valve came out easily. The little piston thing below the spring needed some good pressure from a screw driver to move and needed help all the way out. Should that part be free moving? Maybe my problem?

I have run some 2000 grit paper over it with oil and re assembled. Now moves freely. Possibly the cause of my old/new engine bearings failure.

40 psi Oil pressure at idle on 1st start after new oil filter and stripping oil pump. Couple of minutes running and no blowing filter seal or other leaks.
    Fingers crossed it’s solved.

Are you sure that's a high capacity pump ?, it doesn't look like it. The extra capacity comes from a longer rotor and the end cap is thicker to accomodate it. That end cap looks standard to me.

It was sold to me as a high pressure/ high capacity pump by burton power but I did clock today that it was only showing 40psi on the mechanical gauge at idle after cold start.
Maybe I have paid for something I never received.

I did get the car out today and did a couple of miles. All seemed good apart from when I got back realised the cometic sump gasket is not sufficient thickness to seal the roughly molded tin sump. I will get a replacement competition paper gasket. Possibly remove engine again to fit

It's definitely not a high capacity pump as Tony B has said.
Also, high pressure pump doesn't make higher pressure than a standard pump at idle - you'd need approx 1500 revs to see 60psi in a high pressure pump with a good engine.

Re: engine builders cast your eye over my xflow rebuild please

Update :- all up and running again. Changed sump gasket and a bit of gasket sealant were they meet rubber seals. No leaks so happy with that.
im keeping it below 3000rpm just getting some miles on it. Pressure gauge wise I’m seeing about 40psi on cold start and dropping down to 35psi 25min run.

Could someone just just confirm what pressures are good for a 1720 crossflow? What pressures should make me switch off? Like dropping below 20 or likes?

    thank you

with hot oil an x/flow will be lucky to have 20 psi oil pressure on tick over, more likely 10psi

that has an aweful lot to do with your bearing clearances you are running and the oil you are using! Personally, i wouldnt be happy with much less than 20psi tick over. on my last xflow which i used for targa rallies, i had a large orange oil light set to 18psi, and it would sometimes barely flicker on idle after a very hard run.

P.S, i just read the thread, and i have to commend your enthusiasm and sticking with the build and problems and not giving in with your very limited knowledge, fair dues to you , well done

What grade of oil have you got in there ... id personally use a dog cheap 10/40 multigrade then after running in pop a 20/50 Valvaline or Millers ....
