Cossy yb oil pressure too high

    Hi
This afternoon I started my yb engine for the very first time and noticed that the oil pressure gauge on 6 dial dash goes off the scale-way too high. I thought I better check gauge so I put my compressor outlet through regulator and set it at 50psi and the gauge went up to half way which I think is fine
So my engine is definetly producing too much oil pressure BUT the big question is why?
Its has been rebored and all bearings in perfect shape, and it has one of them high pressure oil pumps (which came with engine when I bought it-it looked brand new and never used)
Needle was off the gauge on tickover, I didn't even rev it up at all!
Any ideas to what could cause this?

I would first start by checking your oil pressure with a properly calibrated gauge for the purpose intended. We had a Group A Escort Cosworth Rally Car that would see 90psi on the gauge on start up. The pressure soon began to drop has things started to warm up.

Im guessing it is well over 100 psi as the needle moves totally over to the r/h side of gauge.
If just under half way is 50 psi its got to be over 100 for sure, Is the pressure relief valve in pump easy to get at/remove if I remove the sump?

Get the engine properly warmed up and see what happens to the pressure, before taking anything to bits.

relief valve is in the pump and you cant take it out

Will it do any any damage running it at this pressure though?

no because oil pressure cold is pretty meaningless, as i said warm the engine up fully and see what the pressure is warm, what oil viscosity are you using?

My Duratec runs very oil pressure at idle from cold, running a 10/60 so have to wait for the engine to warm up before moving off. What oil grade do you use?

thats quite thick, that wont help high pressure readings

Ah ok, im going to try and get a definitve pressure reading by using a gauge tomorrow and see exactly how high it is and let the engine warm right up and see how it goes!

Just make sure the gauge you use is accurate or your tests are useless. Smiths are a good oil gauge to use as are Raceline. The std factory gauges are there more has a guide than an accurate reading.

I ran it today with e decent pressure gauge and its 95psi cold, ran for a few minutes and revs began to hunt up and down so need to find out whats causing that before I run it up to temperature.

Re: Cossy yb oil pressure too high

today I run it up to temp after setting the idle and getting steady idle and it went down to 80 psi when hot which I feel is still to much, think im going to try and use a different thinner oil and see what results I get from that.

Hi Graham water up to temp, don't hink the oil will get up to proper temp as there is the oil Modine so it probably wont get real hot til I drive it!

the modine will help warm the oil up!

Never heard or seen a oil radiator referred to as a 'modine' Had to look it up - its a company that supplies radiators! And with Grahams comment ^^^ i'm really confused! Is this a water / oil cooler then?

Cossy yb oil pressure too high

As I understand they cool/warm the oil from water jacket .It’s not really a rad more an adapter on the side of the block.

its an oil cooler, water to oil instead of air to oil, not as efficient as a proper oil cooler, but it does have the advantage that it will warm up cold oil.

    heres an aftermarket version https://www.merlinmotorsport.co.uk/s...heat-exchanger

I was aware of the Laminova types - I'm using one on my zetec engined RS2000, more of a supplementary thing as the zetec doesn't need oil cooling as std and its unlikely to get track trashed so a little cooling is ok with me.
