My MK2 Escort. Soon to be 20v

    Hi,

This is my mk2 Escort 4 door. Initially wanted a 2 door but as you well know they command a premium so opted for this. Looked solid so shelled out 1400 for her. With a decent shell to start with, it saves time with messing with costly repairs so I could concentrate on a new engine. The choice is a 4age 20v blacktop. I know its not a traditional engine swap however for the money its a no brainer. Reliability, lightweight, High revving and sounds great. with 170 bhp on tap, it should be a nice sleeper too

While im still waiting for the complete engine from Canada, Ive been gathering up the parts to start the project:

    Type 9 Gearbox with quickshift.
    Chassis Mount Kit
    E30 318i Radiator
Bias Pedal Box kit (collecting this weekend)

    Still to get
Type 9 to 4age alloy bellhousing
    AP Racing Centre Plate
    Bellhousing bolt set
    Spigot bearing
32mm & 16mm diameter pipe for water lines
    New Propshaft
Various front and rear suspension goodies and bigger brake setup
    4age exhaust manifold
    2.25 crossflow exhaust system

Apart from the AVO steering wheel and some lotus steel wheels/deep dish steels then the car should look standard with a nice stance to it. Will keep you guys informed how this project takes shape. Thanks for looking

I hope so! Never driven a 4age before but everybody raves about them. Seem to getting more popular too. Keep an eye on the post as i will be updating it with the progress.

Re: My MK2 Escort. Soon to be 20v

Just a few pics of some bits ive gathered for the project.

Set of 5 Mexico Steels with new tyres. Was looking for some lotus steels with caps but they cost a fortune.

Capri 2.8 Struts with Princess 4 pot calipers. Need some work doing to these!

Bias pedal box. Original Ford unit converted

4age bellhousing for the type 9 gearbox, spigot bearing and AP Racing Pinto clutch.

    Beemer Radiator

4age chassis mount from Grp 4 Fabrications

And finally after weeks of waiting, dicking about with customs and the shipping company the eagle has finally landed. The engine is in great condition and came as promised with an uncut wiring loom, ECU and fusebox. Started to strip off the air con and power steering pumps, exhaust manifold and gearbox. The company did miss a few off some sensors needed but they have assured me they will be with me within 2 weeks.

Re: My MK2 Escort. Soon to be 20v

Done a little bit more today. Started to take off the air intake housing which isn't needed. Inside the casing each throttle body has its own trumpet which is a result as I was expecting to have to buy some after market ones. Although they are facing downwards, it simply the case of removing the back plate and turn them round so they are facing upwards.

Now that this is compete I started to measure up the block. As im intending to use the stock distributor, ECU and water outlets, I need to room for these. The main issue is the radiator sensor right at the back of the block and overall I need to allow 25 inches from the bulkhead. With the engine this far forward and sump seems very small, I may be able to chassis mount the engine and clear the crossmember and steering rack without modification. I this is the case then happy days!

Another part to put on ebay.

Also started to clean up the type 9 gearbox with the trusty carb cleaner and water.

Was thinking the exact same thing the other day! Pulling the engine forward to clear the rad pipes etc would allow you to not modify the sump but also it will pull the gearbox forward so that it lines up with the standard lever hole so no cutting involved there. Well thats my view of it, and it should work

    Great progress

Hopefully Dean we are right on this one as its another headache gone. As I have no welding skills, I don't fancy converting to a rear bowl setup if I can help it. I cant believe that the sump pan is so small on a 4age. How are you going to tackle yours m8?

I'm waiting on some parts from USA, waterline kit is the main one as i'm not cutting the bulkhead. The waterline housing that replaces the standard thermostat stuff is 2.5" thick so I need to pull the engine forward for this to clear anyway plus i need to be careful of the heater pipes so i'm just gona drop it in to clear the steering rack and see how things are. If it looks good and there is good clearance then carry on from there

I think with the 20V its too busy at the back of the head to get it sitting far enough back to warrant a rear bowl, whereas the 16V you can, M11rf's 16V is quite tight on the bulkhead and he lost a few inches of sump so pull it forward for the 20V install and we may get by without mods.

I have no welding skills either, but need to learn one day

The waterline and distributor relocation kits are costly but I may need them. Really need to line up the engine clearing the rack and see how things look at the back. Your right about the back of the 20v. Its chaos m8 with sensors everywhere. Still trying to work whats needed from the loom and whats not. Im going to need to learn some welding skills too as you cant really have a classic ford and not know how to weld unless you have deep pockets to pay someone else

I am not sure if you guys know about the dizzy mod?

You can use individual coil on plug type ignition and only use the guts off the dizzy, without putting the cap and rotar arm on, that should save a lot of room. I looked into it when i was thinking about doing a black top.
You wire all the coilpacks together and put them all to the trigger wire, they all fire together, all at the same time, but apparently it does not cause pre detonation and people have been running it for a long time.
Only down side is it puts extra load on coilpacks and plugs as they are firing 4 times faster than they should.

Thanks M11rf. I have seen this setup and a few seem to get good results from it. Im still trying to workout the stock setup. Once I have this working then I can tinker about If i have to cut the bulkhead slighty to accomodate it then thats not a major problem. Cant weld but can use a angle grinder.

No longer soon to be 20v. Its now a 20v 4age escort and it sounds f**king mental. Will get some pics up shortly on the build and spec.

Looks quite at home in there! You didn't go with the BMW rad in the end then?

I don't know anything about those engines but assume they're not available here as you had to ship one from Canada?

I didnt want to cut the whole front panel to get it to fit. The 4age 20v came from the AE101 and AE111 Corolla's for the Japanese market. Plenty of companies in the u.s and canada import them in and sell them. The irish boys like them too for rallying.

Lol it didnt go from the garage straight into the bay all wired up. Heres a few pics of bits I bought or of the build.

Sierra Cossie fuel pump, filter and cradle. Only ended up using the pump and clamps for the pump and filter.

RS crossmember modified to remove std engine mounts as my engine is chassis mounted.

Ashley 2.25" system for a crossflow used as its the same side as the 4age.

4age ashley manifold. Intended for the 16v but with slight modification works a treat with the 20v and fits the escort nicely.

Mr2/AE86 starter. Needed if your using type9 bellhousing or T50 gearbox.

Water relocation kit used. 20v water pipes and thermostat are located at the back of the engine where the bulkhead wants to be. I didn't fancy cutting the bulkhead so this was used to have a more traditional rwd setup.

What ignition/ECU setup are you running? Did you remove the whole of the distributor or just the cap and rotor as some do?

    Thanks

Im using Omex 600 with a front pulley crank sensor. Now using a ford edis coilpack. The distributor was removed completely. Some people keep the base of the distributor if they are using individual coilpacks and the stock igniter and ecu but i think individual coil packs work shit so just done away with the whole lot.

Re: My MK2 Escort. Soon to be 20v

Hi phil and thank for the comments. The water relocation kit cam came from SQ engineering in Australia. Costs approx 240 all in which is cheap for this type of kit. Works excellent, well made and fits like a OEM part.
I love this engine. It powers a escort very well, sounds great, revs forever, bomb proof, lightweight and its still only a 1600 so fuel economy is good even after nailing it all day.

TBH In standard trim the engine is too powerful for the shell so the shell needs work doing to it to make it more solid. Stuff like front strut brace, polybushes all round, anti dive kit, twin cam ARB, new rear shocks, anti tramp kit/4 link etc.

The ultimate aim is high comp 200 bhp n/a engine so I have a few ideas on how I can achieve this. I take it yours is for competition purposes?

Re: My MK2 Escort. Soon to be 20v

A few more pictures of the build.....

Omex 600 used to control the 4age.

4 relays needed. VVT, Radiator fan, Oxygen sensor and fuel pump.

Bare omex supplied loom. Started by sorting out what wires were for sensors, not used and in car wiring.

This is where the distributor was. 2 screws and it pulls out destination egay! 20p cover used to fill the space. Bit of sealant and its game on.

Standard 20v throttle bodies and ISCV modified so it plugs straight into the omex 600. TB's have had all the emission control, air con, brake booster and power steering pipes removed.

Front crank pulley with 36-1 trigger wheel mounted.

Re: My MK2 Escort. Soon to be 20v

    A few more pics

Last time the crossflow was in the escort. Great engine but its no match for 4age.

ECU and relays are located in the glovebox so needed to make a hole big enough to all the wiring in. Just drilled a few holes then used a hacksaw to cut the square out.

In a Mk2 this red and white wire im holding is for the temp gauge. Its a factory setup with everything working as it should so the temp sender is located in the bypass plate at the back of the engine using a adapter.

    New crossmember fitted

    Crossflow out. Never to return

Look at those bad ass original floor. Not bad for a 34 year old car. Never been touched and no rust. At this stage I did think I don't want to cut the tunnel to accommodate the type 9

Re: My MK2 Escort. Soon to be 20v

First fit up of the 4age in the bay.

This is the original starter solenoid which is no longer needed. 2 red thick wires normally go to the battery and starter motor. Red/Black wire is your ignition start, Yellow/Black goes to the coil when starting. With a 4age starter simply connect the exciter wire to the black/red wire and thick wire from the starter straight to the battery. Remove the rest.

These 3 wires are from the crossflow alternator. The 2 red thick wires are not needed. The blue wire is the alternator charge lamp.

Probably my favourite picture of all. Taken at the end of the first day of the swap.

The car is up and running and complete.......well these things are never finished are they

The plan was to drive the car to the classic ford show and made this target with ease. Its a dream to drive and very pleased with it so far.

The pics you see are when I get a spare hour to upload the build on the here so hopefully it can help others who may be thinking or in the process of putting a 4age in their cars.

When I decided to go the 20v route, I asked for help and advice of someone whose 20v 4age escort is very well known on this and another site and basically got fuck all from them. Not even a reply. I vowed I wouldn't do the same and attempt to share good solid info. Hopefully somebody benefits from it.
