    Atlas axle will it fit.

Just a quick enquiry, I have my narrowed atlas axle away for dif install. Are they are straight swap or is the diff length different i.e. will i need a new prop (lengthwise) if so i will wait until i change the engine etc. I think the flange size is correct

Its just to save me taking the car apart to find out the hard way.

    Thanks

Atlas is an atlas, no physical difference in length, only over it's width as you say it's narrow. Diff is all housed in the casing which won't
    Change...

    Atlas axle will it fit.

Thanks for the quick reply. Now I realise the vital info I missed. I currently have an English axle fitted.

    Apologies.

So the crucial bit is will the flange distance front to back change (if that makes sense)

I'm not sure what the difference is in dimensions between an Atlas and an English casing.

so my axle is back and a quick measure up on an english diff and the atlas looks like the english is an inch/25mm shorter thus making the prop 25mm longer.

Re: Atlas axle will it fit.

Just a quick update. Finally refitted the propshaft and it is currently the original 2 part prop with the centre bearing carrier. Good news is the prop actually fitted

    BUT.....

The 2 bolts for the bearing carrier didn't line up by a out 3-4 mm. So the prop is effectively too long in the 2nd half. The front part is fine and has room to move etc. As it is a rubber bush i manged to get the bolts in but will this have an effect on the diff being tightish. The car when i did this the car was jacked up but not on the diff so will movement make this better or worse as the axle travels through it suspension.

    Cheers guys

im not 100 sure about an escort, but bmw and landrover prop centre bearings should have a preload on them

Re: Atlas axle will it fit.

I would think it would put extra stress on the centre bearing as the bearing can't move as the axle travels up in it's suspension arc.

Not sure I've described that very well, but I know what I'm getting at

Not even sure I understood your question properly at 1st having re-read it.

I do it is pressure on the diff that concerns me will it get more when i lower the car on its wheels or less or theoretically it should stay the same. There is no movement in the joints like a spline etc that only exists on the front half and i assuem accounts for movement in the front. On the bearing carrier the bolt holes are slotted but that only allows for some adjustment to fit the car no sliding etc.

I may slacken the bolts and jack up the axle and see if it moves on the bolts.
